When I was a kid my Grandma Martha, my Mom's Mother, would take us to church. Well, not right away, first thing on Sunday morning, she insisted on washing our faces and combing our hair and then she heaped on the indignity by making us put on clean, stiff, jeans that had been kiln-dried by the industrial Sears-Roebuck dryer my grandfather had in the basement. When we got to the church, an impressive brick and Presbyterian structure, she had us sit beside her during the service on pews that had been hewn out of big, uncomfortable oaks and polished by decades of gingham, worsted wool, and polyester sliding across them. We fidgeted. I am not proud of it, but in my defense we were kids who were accustomed to a sort of care-free early 1970's existence and suddenly we were being forced to sit in jeans that would not bend right for several more days. We swung our legs, we kicked the pew in front of us, we whispered and snickered. "BE STILL!" she would say, forcefully but somehow with love shining through her frustration. We were not still. Eventually, she would dig in her purse and dole out carefully torn, half-sticks of Wrigley's Double-mint gum, each coming with a "shush, now!" The gum stunned us into silence. I think not so much because our mouths were busy, but because who chews a half-stick of gum? It took a lot of concentration to not accidentally swallow that tiny little nugget of minty goodness. She got us through the service that way, a half-stick at a time. How much she was able to hear of the sermon when she was worrying over us, I will never know. I do know that I have been thinking about that a lot lately, as I am fidgeting in the isolation. Now it just seems like good practice. The lesson to "be still" even when you are uncomfortable and itching to be free, took too many years to sink in but now I appreciate it at a much deeper level. I am older now than she was then, but I still chew three sticks of gum at a time. I have the notion that Grandma Martha would forgive me.
I HAVE SAID IT BEFORE. The Pearl of is part of The Retreat of Loganville. My question is why don't they inform the workers who work there. Seems like this company only tells a select few and why is the supposedly nurse not working in c bldg where they are being kept? Oh they have caregivers or I should say RA'S. THAT BLDG doesn't even have a phone
