The employment figures for January were better than expected, with the addition of 130,000 jobs. Healthcare was the sector of note, adding 86,000 jobs, nearly two-thirds of the total, according to the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Following ambulatory care, hospitals added 18,300 jobs, and nursing and residential care facilities saw 13,300 new positions.

FMs will need to manage operating costs, budget constraints, workplace safety, operational reliability and resilience, as medical jobs increase headcount. Stabilizing the job market and recording a slightly lower unemployment rate inspires healthcare institutions to fill positions. There are indications that the built environment has openings from technical/mechanical to executive positions in facility management. The FMLink Career Center is showing over 1,600 opportunities. Variable frequency drives are a hot topic. Advancements in VFD technology and reductions in price are driving rapid market adoption. Dramatic energy savings can deliver a payback period measured in months, and VFDs enable precise motor control in many industrial process applications.

But VFDs are also hot in the literal sense: the advanced electronics pack more semiconductor components into a smaller form factor, resulting in more intense heat generation. Elevated temperatures degrade performance, impair operational reliability and shorten service life. The basic challenge of VFD cooling comes from the fact that VFDs usually need to be placed in an enclosure to protect them from the immediate environment, and paradoxically, these enclosures trap heat which necessitates protection from overheating.

A variety of cooling methods have proven effective, including passive air cooling with fans and heat exchangers, and active cooling with air conditioning and water cooling. Unfortunately, determining the cooling load can be a bit confusing. Calculations are needlessly complicated by a mismatch of systems of measurement. If you’re a regular reader of Sara Marberry’s blog, you’ll know that she loves looking at the past to inform the future. She believes a thorough thoughtful review of iconic hospital projects of the past gives us a lot to think about as we consider the evolution of healthcare design over the decades.

In this article, Sara writes about “10 Projects that Changed Healthcare Design,” as selected by members the American College of Healthcare Architects (ACHA). Jennifer Aliber and Bryan Langlands sent a survey asking the ACHA members to list three healthcare projects that significantly influenced them and why. Then, they selected 10 projects that received multiple mentions and then reviewed the available literature and data, looked at architectural photography, and interviewed the project architects and consultants.

The January job surge surprised government officials, economists, employers and employees alike. While it was released five days later than usual due to the partial government shutdown, it was worth the wait. Stabilizing the job market and recording a slightly lower unemployment rate inspires companies to consider filling positions where current employees are stretched and doing more than their share.

Marking a significant advancement in promoting the use of sustainably sourced wood, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced a determination on wood certification systems in the LEED v5 green building rating system. The goal of this determination is to spur demand for more certified wood products worldwide.

The new alignment in LEED v5 allows wood sourced from multiple credible standards to count toward LEED points. This includes wood sourced from the three most recognized chain-of-custody standards: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), and PEFC International. While each of these wood certification programs has differences in its approach and requirements, USGBC determined that all of the standards offer solid protection against deforestation and promote sustainable forestry.
