The winners of The Nightingale Awards 2025 were announced during the Healthcare Design Conference + Expo (HCD 2025) earlier this week. Dirtt’s Cove exam module won the Nightingale Best of Competition Award in addition to the Gold Award in Architectural Products: Clinical.

The Nightingale Awards — the industry’s leading program to recognize products related to the healthcare built environment — are named for Florence Nightingale, a tireless advocate for the improvement of care and conditions in hospitals in the 1800s. The judging criteria for the awards is the product’s contribution or solution for clinical or operational outcomes; aesthetics and innovation; built environment solution, durability, functionality, and quality; industry certifications and standards; environmental sustainability; and list price. To evaluate the entries, 16 jurors visited exhibitors’ booths before the Healthcare Design Expo opened to examine the products, hear the story of their design and development, and ask questions.

While the 2022 FGI Guidelines offer clear direction on the physical properties of OR flooring —such as being cleanable, slip-resistant, and monolithic with a coved base —they are silent on color.

At the 2025 PDC Summit in Atlanta, an experiment by Shaw Contract uncovered a surprisingly clear answer to a long-standing debate in healthcare design: “Does the color of operating room flooring affect how easily surgical instruments can be found when dropped?” Out of 129 participants, a resounding 91.4% (118 people) said it was easier to spot instruments on the lighter flooring, regardless of viewing height.

Based on these findings, we recommend using lighter colored flooring around operating tables and in areas where quickly locating dropped instruments is critical. One example, shown here, is Shaw’s Montage 4484V in Flicker 84505.
