THE HIPPO'S QUESTION OF THE DAY:

It’s nearing back-to-school time … If you could go back to high school years, what is one thing that you would do differently? (Reddit)

Some responses:

Let loose a little more and try to maintain friendships instead of withdrawing.

Be more confident. Do things that I was hesitant about.

Enjoy the freedom of childhood a little more.

Body slam the [crap] out of everyone that bullied me.

Care SOOOOO much less about peers opinions of me.

Study harder. Pay attention. Play sports.

Lift weights and come out.

Workout and eat right ASAP. Dress better and try to look better. Ask out girls or go on dates in general ... join a sports team ... do better in school.

I would have dated the quiet guy who actually liked me and probably would have treated me very well. He was very sweet, but I rejected him because he wasn't "cool" and I always wondered what could have been.

I wouldn't date anyone until at least senior year and focus more on learning. Boyfriends/girlfriends will come and go in high school, but education is vital.

Nothing. And I would not like to go back there.

This may sound crazy … but try a little less academically. It was my only focus. I wish I had a little more fun.

Talk to girls.

If I knew them what I know now I would have approached more women, enjoyed each day more, thought about the future and planned for it plus milked every summer vacation for all I could get.

Treated everyone with more kindness. I was in the “popular crowd” in high school and wasn’t always nice to some others who weren’t. Nothing crazy, but pretty ashamed of how I treated others. I have tried to make it right with some in the years since high school, but I would definitely do that differently.

John Michael's "Did You Know" for Monday 8/11/25:

Did You Know that Engineers competing in a science contest called the Project Hyperion Design Competition figured out a way to get humans to travel through space and reach Alpha Centauri, our closest star system?! It's a big commitment, but the engineers believe it's possible. The spaceship – featuring libraries, tropical forests, and artificial gravity – is 36 miles long and could carry 2400 people. The trip would take 400 years, so a number of generations of people on the ship would never know life on Earth. They would just be part of a multi-generational team of people trying to fly 25 trillion miles until they bumped into our neighboring star system.

If this space habitat ever becomes a reality, it could take us all the way to exoplanet Proxima b.

Summer blues … The latest TikTok coffee trend is a blueberry latte. It’s pretty much an iced latte – espresso and milk – but with the addition of blueberry syrup. Many people are making their own syrup to avoid any artificial flavors. Just simmer equal parts blueberries, sugar, and water until thickened. You can customize it with maple syrup for a “blueberry pancake latte” or add vanilla for a blueberry vanilla twist. Frozen blueberries work just as well as fresh ones.

Blueberry lattes are trending on TikTok, and these beautiful, tri-colored coffee drinks are easy to make at home. Start by making a homemade blueberry syrup, then layer the syrup in a glass with your preferred milk and espresso. You can make the blueberry syrup with either fresh or frozen berries bl...

John Mellencamp on “Jack and Diane.”
“That song was really — even though it’s very simple, it’s funny to me, we really had to work hard. I think it’s kind of odd and hysterical that in all of rock ’n’ roll is there any more famous couple than those two people in that song? Name another song that’s y’know. You can’t.”

Tie-In: On this day in 2000 -- August 11th -- John Mellencamp begins an impromptu short tour in Philadelphia, doing acoustic shows in town squares.

Language anxiety ... Are you hesitant to travel overseas because you're worried you won’t know what to say once you land? You’re not alone. A new survey from the language learning platform Preply reveals that 1 in 3 Americans deliberately avoid traveling to countries where they can’t speak the language. That’s over 64 million people letting language anxiety shape their travel plans. The survey found that while 80% of Americans say it’s important to learn a few local phrases before traveling abroad, only 58% actually do it. And when they do, 40% cram at the last minute, grabbing phrases at the airport instead of preparing ahead. The countries that intimidate Americans the most are China, followed by Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and France.

A new survey shows that nearly one-third of Americans who have traveled abroad deliberately choose destinations where they won't need to speak a foreign language.

Sleeping too much? We hear a lot about the harmful effects of not getting enough sleep. But it seems getting too much sleep is bad for you as well. In fact, it’s even worse than sleeping too little. Researchers at the National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute analyzed data from nearly 90,000 adults and discovered that both short sleep durations (less than seven hours) and long sleep durations (more than nine hours) were linked to higher mortality rates compared to those who slept seven to eight hours. Those who didn’t get enough sleep had a 14% increase in death risk. However, those who slept too long had a 34% increased risk. Poor sleep quality was linked to 172 diseases, including Parkinson’s, type 2 diabetes, and kidney failure.

Actual Health Advice: Become a Juggler

If you hate running and don't like the gym, here's something different: Learn to juggle. (???)

"The New York Post" did a story on how more and more studies have found juggling can boost brain health. It can even count as exercise.

It helps with everything from hand-eye coordination to balance. Or as one neuroscientist explained, it "changes how quickly you react to objects, how well you coordinate between two hands, and how you keep your posture under control."

Just juggling two balls can have a positive effect, so you don't have to be crazy good at it. But a study in 2022 found that all 20 seniors in a group were eventually able to juggle three balls. It just takes practice.

On top of the brain boost, it can also help keep you fit. "The New York Times" did a story a while back that said juggling can burn up to 280 calories per hour. That's roughly what you'd get from an hour-long walk.

(NY Post / Brain & Life)

When people—young or old—learn to juggle, their brains change, research shows. These structural changes in the brain after juggling also may improve cognitive function.

Picturesque Countrysides Could Add Turnstiles to Charge Instagram Influencers

A lot of tourist attractions charge admission and parking fees. And now, even remote, picturesque countrysides are looking to capitalize.

There's a rural area in the mountains of northern Italy where local farmers have set up turnstiles . . . like the ones at amusement parks . . . to charge people who are there to take photos.

That seems silly . . . and it is . . . but they aren't targeting regular tourists and retirees. Apparently, the area has been overrun by travel influencers who are flooding the area in droves for their social media "content."

These turnstiles charge around $6 to access several "Instagrammable" spots . . . and they can do this because the land people are passing through is private.

Of course, this publicity and "exclusivity" is just making influencers MORE interested, especially if they can get a shot at these turnstiles. (Which look like this.) One person said, "People go where everyone else goes. We're sheep."

(Yahoo)

With up to 4,000 people a day lining up to visit Instagrammable beauty spots in the Dolomites, landowners are taking measures into their own hands to stem the tide of tourism.

What’s worse – being ghosted or just being flat-out rejected? According to a new study, getting ghosted hurts way more than a straight-up rejection. Researchers put 250 college students through a dating simulation with a fictional crush named Taylor. After two great dates, Taylor either ghosted, rejected, or agreed to a third date. Not surprisingly, those who were rejected or ghosted suffered bruised egos and increased negative emotions compared to the ones who got a third date. But interestingly, the people who were ghosted felt more emotionally attached than the rejected ones. They were more likely to stalk Taylor’s socials and send a “just checking in” text. Basically, those who were ghosted were still hanging on, which ends up causing more emotional harm than just being outright rejected.

Ten '90s TV Shows That Change the World

People refer to the 2000s as the start of a new golden age of TV. But some important stuff was happening in the '90s, too. Here are 10 shows from that decade that really changed things:

1. "The Simpsons": "Reshaped comedy, animation, and pop culture as we know it."

2. "Friends": "A global phenomenon that redefined the modern sitcom."

3. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer": "Elevated teen TV and proved genre could be emotionally profound."

4. "Seinfeld": "Turned nothing into something and changed TV comedy forever."

5. "The X-Files": "Brought paranoia, science fiction, and mythmaking into the mainstream."

6. "ER": "Turned medical dramas into high-stakes, character-driven epics."

7. "Law & Order": "Redefined procedural storytelling for the modern era."

8. "Charmed": "Proved female-led genre TV could be both magical and mainstream."

9. "Beverly Hills, 90210": "Made teen dramas a serious and wildly popular TV genre."

10. "Twin Peaks": "Blurred the line between television and art in a way no show had before."

The shows that made the '90s one of TV's most significant decades.

THE HIPPO'S QUESTION OF THE DAY:

Unfortunately named … Did you know there are a few hundred men in America with the name Jeffrey Epstein, who probably never thought their name would get so much attention? But now that it's in the news every day, these poor guys have to now deal with jokes, and even some embarrassment. But they're not the first ones to have this problem. Having to share your name with someone who is famous, whether for good or bad reasons, can often be a huge nuisance.

Do you share a name with a famous person? What is your name?
How has it affected your life?
Has it caused any problems?
Have you considered changing your name?
Does the name help you get a table at restaurants?
Is it impossible for you to Google search yourself?
