John Michael's "Did You Know" for Tuesday 10/7/25:
Did You Know that Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson "secretly" broke the news about next year's Rush reunion tour on Sunday night during a Q&A event at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, and Geddy made one thing perfectly clear?!
Geddy Lee on the goal of Rush's reunion tour.
"Well our idea was not to try to be Rush 2.0. You know, just to pay homage to our music, pay homage to our lost brother [Neil Peart], and represent the songs and celebrate the songs."
So, after he and Alex Lifeson watched some YouTube videos of drummer Anika Niles on the advice of Geddy's bass tech, they decided to move forward, even though they knew playing in the spirit of the late Neil Peart was going to be difficult.
Geddy Lee on the difficulties of choosing another drummer to play Rush songs.
"No matter who the drummer is, they all have their own perception of what it's like to play a Rush song, and they may not line up with the way we play Rush songs. So, whoever we were going to choose was going to be difficult and there's going to be like a translation."
With that they brought Anika to Canada to see if she would be a good fit.
Geddy Lee on playing with Anika Niles.
"It wasn't an audition because at that point we weren't really sure that we were going to tour. It was all an experiment. Anyway, I'm very happy to say that she is fantastic to play with and we've had now a number of sessions with her and she came to Rush music without any preconceptions. It also made it very difficult because we had to explain nuances and work on subtleties and she had to really try to get into Neil's headspace and his feel. A lot of drummers can play Neil's drum fills, but to combine that with the feel of those songs so that it feels the way you guys want to hear those songs, that's work. That requires work. So, she's winning."
Anika Niles is 42 and has released two albums, Pikalar in 2017 and For a Colorful Soul in 2020.
The tour will start on June 7th with the first of two nights at the Forum in Los Angeles, which is where they did their last show on August 1st, 2015. They will do multiple shows in seven cities across Canada, the United States and Mexico, with Geddy saying, "We'll see how that goes." They'll follow up Los Angeles with:
