University of Montevallo Mass Communication Program

University of Montevallo Mass Communication Program UM's Mass Communication Program features two concentrations for majors to choose from: Multimedia Journalism and Broadcast Production.

The Mass Communication Program teaches the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the fields of radio, television, newspapers, magazines, advertising, video production, corporate or governmental media relations, and web-related communication. The convergence of traditional mass media and the Internet has highlighted the importance of critical thinking, creativity, and effective writing. Career success depends upon adapting to constantly changing technology.

The University of Montevallo Mass Communication Program has soared in the Broadcast Education Association's 2025 Recognition of Institutional Excellence in Media rankings, standing out among 159 ranked schools. UM earned first place in the film and video competition in Alabama and 20th internationally (up from 27th in 2024) and rose from 85th to 73rd for overall top programs internationally.

The rankings are based solely on the creative achievements of each schoolsโ€™ students and the results from the BEA Festival of Media Arts, the preeminent international media competition focused on student and faculty creative endeavors. Entries go through a blind-juried review in the following competitions: audio, documentary, film and video, interactive multimedia and emerging technologies, news, scriptwriting and sports.

Next in our Senior Spotlight series is Liam Nagle!

Liam is in our Broadcast Production concentration and double minoring in Digital Filmmaking and Social Media Administration.

Some of Liamโ€™s favorite memories during his time in our program are the trips he took to Las Vegas for the BEA conference and NAB show. โ€œI learned so much over the course of those trips,โ€ he said, โ€œand had the time of my life doing it! Since when has an event been this simultaneously educational and fun!?โ€

After graduation, Liam plans to pursue a career in videography and to continue expanding his work with independent clients.

Jake is in our Multimedia Journalism concentration.

He said one of his favorite memories was being in the control room and helping produce Vallo Vision News. Jake has been a producer and anchor for VVN for the last year, and heโ€™s covered a lot of esports news for the VVN website and newscast.

Anthony is in our Multimedia Journalism concentration.

He said his favorite memory was working on the digital team in the MC 499 capstone class. Dr. Finklea often referred to him as the โ€œDigital Rockโ€ because of his dependability on the digital team.

After graduation, Anthony plans to work in social media or digital writing.

Kaitie is in our Broadcast Production concentration and minoring in Digital Filmmaking.

In addition to being named the 2025 Mass Comm Student of the Year, Kaitie is also the president of our Broadcast Education Chapter!

In fact, Kaitieโ€™s time in BEA gave her one of her favorite memories at UM. โ€œI loved working on the BEA 2024 48-Hour Challenge,โ€ she said. โ€œI got to work with my friends on a fun project and have our hard work recognized at the national level.โ€

After graduation, Kaitie hopes to continue expanding on the skills sheโ€™s learned here as she works in a variety of productions, ranging from sports to music to filmmaking.
