University of Montevallo Mass Communication Program

University of Montevallo Mass Communication Program UM's Mass Communication Program features two concentrations for majors to choose from: Multimedia Journalism and Broadcast Production.

The Mass Communication Program teaches the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the fields of radio, television, newspapers, magazines, advertising, video production, corporate or governmental media relations, and web-related communication. The convergence of traditional mass media and the Internet has highlighted the importance of critical thinking, creativity, and effective writing. Career success depends upon adapting to constantly changing technology.

Carter was a Mass Comm major with a concentration Broadcast Production and a minor in Digital Filmmaking.

“My favorite MC memory is working on all the projects BEA Club produced during my time in the club,” Carter says.

Carter has accepted an internship at WVTM13 for the summer with their creative services department. After his internship, he plans to pursue a career in videography or lifestyle journalism

“My favorite memory was being this year’s BEA president and seeing all the amazing films that we have made this year at our film premiere,” Cami says. It was reassuring to see how proud everyone was, she added.

Walker majored in Mass Communication with a concentration in Multimedia Journalism and minored in Digital Filmmaking.

“I would say my favorite MC memories were getting to work with the BEA club on so many wonderful films and having the opportunity to write and co-direct the Digital Filmmaking capstone film, ‘Phantom Pain,’ alongside one of my best friends, Braxton Johnson,” Walker says.

Walker plans to keep writing and making films. He’s also pursuing jobs as an entertainment journalist.

Preston is a Mass Comm major with a concentration in Multimedia Journalism. He’s also a member of the Track and Field team.

His favorite Mass Comm memory is working on the campus newscast, Vallo Vision News, over the last year. “I’ve wanted to anchor ever since I stepped foot on campus,” Preston says, “but I also love the relationships I built with my classmates and professors! It truly does feel like a family!”

Preston plans to pursue his master’s degree in secondary education and becoming an English teacher and coach.

Madison is a Mass Comm major with a concentration in Multimedia Journalism. She’s also a double major, earning a BA in Music with a concentration in Voice.

Madison says her favorite MC memory is time she spent working on Vallo Vision News this spring. “Getting to anchor Vallo Vision News this semester has really given me the hands-on ‘quick thinking’ skills I need to pursue a career in journalism! By far the best experience I could ask for!”

After graduation, Madison will be working with Shelby County Living Magazine and teaching part time at Vinemont High School.
