See below for a message from Dr. Stewart:

Dear UM family,

Foremost, I hope this message finds you safe and well. After much thought and consideration, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the Aug. 7 commencement ceremony on Flowerhill Lawn. As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise within the state of Alabama, the health and safety of our spring graduates and guests is our highest priority. At this time, a gathering of an expected 1,000 attendees in close proximity on the Flowerhill Lawn is ill advised.

After conducting a survey among the spring 2020 graduates, we are planning to hold a traditional, in-person ceremony on campus once the virus has abated and it is deemed safe to gather in large numbers.

In the coming weeks, all University of Montevallo students will receive free COVID-19 testing through the statewide GuideSafe (formerly Stay Safe Together) program for Alabama. All students will be required to be tested before returning to campus for the fall semester.

This testing program is funded by the federal CARES Act, and is part of the University’s plan for students to return to campus this fall. Students, be sure to check your UM email regularly for a very important email that will include full details regarding testing protocols. This email will be sent from either GuideSafe or Stay Safe Together.

Please continue to monitor UM social media and montevallo.edu/falconforward for frequent updates as well. #FalconFamily

The University of Montevallo has long held a reputation as one of the safest college campuses in Alabama. The health and safety of everyone on campus is paramount and UM is planning to enhance cleaning efforts, utilize personal protective equipment and potentially modify traditional classroom settings, among other steps. These measures are detailed in the Falcon Forward plan, which serves as an overview of a larger plan and outlines Montevallo’s commitment to safety as it prepares for the fall.

We are looking forward to welcoming you back to campus in the coming months. Read President Stewart's full message and check out the Falcon Forward plan at https://fal.cn/38Ta9

During last night's meeting, Montevallo's City Council passed a resolution mandating the wearing of facemasks in public within the City of Montevallo. This takes effect as of 5 PM today, June 23, and will continue until further notice.

Please read the letter from Mayor Cost, as well as the resolution in its entirety, in this post or on the city website at https://www.cityofmontevallo.com/Assets/Files/LiveAndPlay/COVID19/6.23.2020%20Face%20Mak%20Resolution.pdf.

In summary:

- The goal of wearing masks is to impede the spread of your saliva while speaking, coughing, sneezing, etc. in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
- Effective today at 5 PM, masks are required to cover your nose and mouth when you are in public spaces, primarily inside public buildings, and outside when a 6 foot distance cannot be maintained between yourself and others who do not live in your household.
- Masks are NOT required while you are alone; while you are in private spaces such as a home, car, or non-public office; while exercising alone; while eating, drinking, or in a doctor's office; or by people who cannot medically tolerate wearing a mask.
- Be prepared to wear your mask as you enter a restaurant or doctor's office, but when it is time to eat, drink, or be examined, remove your mask.
- This requirement applies to employees, customers, and clients of businesses within the city of Montevallo. Although it is in place to protect the health of our community, there will be no punishment for non-compliance.

Thank YOU for doing your part to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community while you shop at our fantastic Montevallo businesses!

Yesterday, Montevallo lost an absolute legend. Delores "Dolly" Brumfield White died in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Born on May 26, 1932, Dolly spent most of her career teaching, coaching, and mentoring at Henderson State University. Before that, the Prichard, Alabama native began playing baseball in the shipyards of Mobile. At 14, she convinced her mother to sign her up for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. White signed with the South Bend Blue Sox and traveled to Havana, Cuba for spring training in 1947. From 1950-1954, Dolly attended Alabama College where she majored in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. She played professional baseball until an injury ended her career in 1953. She used her baseball paychecks to cover college expenses and would often have to negotiate early leave from classes for spring training, or a late return in fall if her team made a playoff run. After college, Dolly attended graduate school and worked in Mississippi before joining the faculty at Henderson State. While teaching, she was recognized for her contributions to the field of Physical Education by the administrations of Governor Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush. In 1988, Dolly and the AAGPBL were honored with "Women in Baseball," a permanent exhibit at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Both White and the AAGPBL were key inspirations for the 1992 film, A League of Their Own.

College Night 2014 was extra special for Milner Archives and Special Collections. White was a featured speaker on campus and she officially introduced the "Dr. Delores Brumfield White Collection" of AAGPBL and baseball related materials, one of the most requested collections in archives.

Dolly was 88.
