This week’s H.O.R.N.E.T. Alumni Spotlight is Maggie M. Brand!
Brand graduated from Alabama State University in Spring 2007 with a B.A. in Business Management. She currently works as a workforce development specialist, also known as a business service representative, for the Department of Workforce. When attending ASU, she was a part Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) and Phi Beta Lamda (PBL) Professional Business Fraternity, Inc. Brand’s words of wisdom for current students are “If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again.  Giving up is not an option. You define your success, keep your eyes on you. And lately, you are beautifully and wonderfully made. Self Love is key because no one will love you more than you love yourself. Give yourself grace, learn the lesson.”

🌟 History made! 🌟 Azzie Melton Oliver, an Alabama State University alumna, has been appointed the first Black District Attorney of Montgomery County! 🏛️ Appointed by Governor Kay Ivey, Oliver will finish the term of Daryl Bailey, following his retirement. A 1998 ASU graduate in Criminal Justice, Oliver has spent her career serving Montgomery and is committed to making the capital city safer for all.

“ASU helped me be successful in life and prepared me for law school,” says Oliver. She encourages students to set clear goals and work towards them with determination.

Israeli Airstrike in Central Beirut Kills Hezbollah Spokesman

A rare Israeli airstrike in central Beirut has killed Mohammed Afif, the chief spokesman for Hezbollah, according to the militant group. The attack struck the Arab socialist Baath party’s office in a busy area of Beirut, resulting in multiple casualties. Afif, who had become a prominent figure following the escalation of the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in September, was actively involved in media efforts after the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike.

The Israeli military has not commented on the strike, which comes amid ongoing violence in the region. Earlier, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed at least 12 people. Tensions continue to rise as both Israel and Hezbollah escalate their military actions.

In Israeli domestic politics, Justice Minister Yariv Levin has seized on a flare attack targeting Prime Minister Netanyahu’s residence to call for the revival of his controversial judicial overhaul plan. Levin stated that restoring order to Israel’s justice system and law enforcement was necessary to address what he called “anarchy” and attempts to undermine the government. The proposed overhaul, which has sparked massive protests in the past, aims to reduce the power of unelected judges and shift more authority to elected officials. Critics argue it would consolidate power in the hands of Netanyahu, who is facing corruption charges.
