According to the Montgomery Historical Society, Judge Nathaniel Hart Davis and his wife Sarah built their home in 1851, and at that time an underground cistern was dug and lined with handmade bricks to provide water for the household. A protective shed was later built over it. The cistern you see today has been restored using many of the original bricks after portions deteriorated over the years. The cistern here at the Davis Museum, dates back to approximately 1851, making it about 175 years old today.
