Recognizing Heat-Related Illnesses During Hot Weather

As temperatures rise, it’s important to recognize the signs of two serious heat-related conditions: heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Heat Exhaustion: This occurs when the body overheats due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures and inadequate hydration. Symptoms include:

• Heavy sweating
• Weakness or fatigue
• Dizziness or fainting
• Nausea or vomiting
• Cool, pale, clammy skin
• Muscle cramps
• Fast, weak pulse

Heat Stroke (Medical Emergency): Heat stroke is more severe and life-threatening. It happens when the body can no longer control its temperature. Look for:

• High body temperature (103°F or higher)
• Hot, red, dry, or damp skin
• Rapid and strong pulse
• Confusion, disorientation, or unconsciousness
• Headache
• Lack of sweating despite the heat

Action Steps:

• Move the person to a cooler location.
• Use cool cloths, fanning, or a bath to bring down body temperature.
• For heat stroke, call 911 immediately—this is a medical emergency.

Stay hydrated, wear loose clothing, and take frequent breaks in the shade when outdoors.
