Geezer Rock Radio

Geezer Rock Radio A weekly radio show on WGDR (91.1 FM) and WGDH (91.7 FM) (and streaming on www.wgdr.org), Goddard College Community Radio, Fridays, 4-6 p.m. Eastern time, USA

“Geezer Rock” is a weekly, one-hour radio program that plays new music by geezers who rock. For our purposes, that’s anyone age 50+ (AARP eligible). On “Geezer Rock,” it’s the musicians who are the “oldies,” not the songs! Yep, we play all-new songs by all of your favorite “touch of gray” rock stars from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s who are still hitting the stages and putting out new albums of new ro

ckin’ tunes. These songs rock, and they deserve to be heard! Broadcast live on WGDR/WGDH (91.1/91.7 FM) in central Vermont, Fridays, 4-6 pm. Show archive at www.wgdr.org/geezer-rock. Syndicated version coming soon across the USA! Stay tuned! (www.geezerrock.org)

We’re talking about Joan Jett, Foghat, Randy Bachman, Neil Young, Robin Trower, Patti Smith, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Pat Benatar, Robert Plant, Jeff Beck, the Bangles, the New Riders, and many, many more who have not given up their guitars! Hey, you know they’ve gotta be good; they’ve had 30 or so years to practice.

To mark the recent passing of Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, the first hour of this week's Geezer Rock show, on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. Vermont time, will be given over to an hour of Phil's music recorded in the 21st century, featuring his co-written songs performed with the bands Further, the Grateful Dead, and Phil and Friends, plus a jazz saxophone interpretation of Lesh's song "The Eleven." And as a post-Halloween commemoration, the Featured Geezers will be the Fleshtones, with three songs from their new album "It's Getting Late (and More Songs about Werewolves)"! Plus a few songs from Ringo, Stevie Wonder, and Patti Smith to encourage everyone in the United States to vote on Tuesday. And more!

If you missed the show, you can still listen to it on the WGDR show archive, until Thursday, Nov. 14th, at WGDR.org!

This week's Geezer Rock is a reminder that listening to blues music helps chase the real blues away. It's a pick-me-up, for sure. So the featured geezers will be the local blues-band Rye Dog, with three songs from their Vermont-centric album "Blues in the 802." Nearby to home, the Tas Cru Band, from Syracuse, New York, chews on some "Grizzle n' Bone," Mick Fleetwood pounds out a heavy riff behind some Hawaiian blues ukulele, and Foghat sings about tonsils and sneakers. And on a forward-thinking note, Stevie Wonder once again wonders if we can fix our nation's broken heart. Tune in and see and hear, today on Geezer Rock!

Listen live, 4-6 p.m. Vermont time, at 91.1 and 91.7 FM in central Vermont or streaming on the 'net at WGDR.org!

This week's Featured Geezer on Geezer Rock is Steve Cropper, previously with Booker T. and the MGs. He's recently put together a new band, Steve Cropper and the Midnight Hour, featuring ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons on guitar. You can hear three songs from their new album in the second hour of the show, and the first hour is all Billy Gibbons, showcasing all of the other bands he's played with in just the past few years. You can listen to the show from now until Thursday, October 10th, at the archive online at WGDR.org.

On this week's Geezer Rock radio show, I played songs by some of the geezer-age artists who took part in the Musicians for Kamala concert (see poster below). And the Featured Geezer in the 5 o'clock hour was the venerable Sixties folkie Tom Rush, who now lives practically next door to me, yonder in New Hampshire. Tom shared his hard-earned musical wisdom that "It All Comes Down to Love" and much more--all on Geezer Rock! You missed the live show, but you can still access it on the archive at WGDR.org until Thursday, October. 3rd. Don't miss out!

Next Tuesday, September 17th, is National Voter Registration Day. If you aren't, I'd personally recommend that you do. Candidate-specific info below, but I think everyone should be registered to vote and take part in our system of government in this way and in any other ways that they can, no matter who they support. I trust and hope that the "good" side will win. Geezer-specific participants include Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips and Bootsy Collins!

The Featured Geezer this week on Geezer Rock is Nick Lowe. The British punk rocker who turned a witty sense of humor and a sharp sense of melody into power pop, Lowe's lately teamed up with the Mexican-wrestling-masked surf-rock band from Memphis--Los Straitjackets. Hear what their cross-Atlantic collaboration turned up--and much more new music by other geezers who rock--this week on Geezer Rock.

You can groove in the grooves until Thursday, September 19th, from the archive at WGDR.org!!!!!!!!!

Well, this has been a right mess for a good many years. It looks like it's settled to Bachman and Cummings's favor, and I hope Kale and Peterson are settled as well. Hard on everyone. I sure have enjoyed the records over the years, though. Thanks to all four guys for the songs they contributed to. https://ultimateclassicrock.com/guess-who-lawsuit-settlement-band-name/?fbclid=IwY2xjawFFtMBleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHfEPnPwJ611TyCWQDPICpwqlv-GG1SaImJDlWFlTtQDkiNsKZfKsIRfuTw_aem_iQvIhOzIorjUJhumJ9qYYQ

This week on Geezer Rock, Hour 1 was the completion of last week's alphabetical review of 21st-century women of the blues, from M to Z, from Marcia Ball and Mavis Staples to the Third Mind (we didn't make it to Z, sadly). In Hour 2, the Featured Geezers were . . . well, there weren't any this week. Instead, Jeff highlighted four new singles by geezers: dark instrumental riffage from Sabbath's Tony Iommi, post-punk redemption by Jane's Addiction, a message of hope from former Yes-man Jon Anderson, and driven rockabilly by Texan Joe Ely. And more!

If you missed hearing it live, you can still relive the wonderfulness until August 15 at the WGDR.org Archive.

And, sadly, we have lost another geezer rocker, and one of the most influential and trailblazing. There will be some of John's most recent tunes on the show this Friday, in tribute.

As the leader of the Bluesbreakers in the 1960s, he advanced the careers of Eric Clapton and members of Fleetwood Mac, Journey and the Rolling Stones.

The first hour of this week's Geezer Rock show continues the deep dive into "live" and "long" songs from last week's show, with some extended jamming (of course) from the Grateful Dead's extended family, two contrasting and ripping versions of "Rock Me, Baby," and more. The Featured Geezers in the second hour are the returning glam-glittered proto-punks the Hollywood Stars, with their first record in about 50 years, as well as some aspirational self-improvement by way of Soul Asylum's new single. And, of course, more! The show will be available in the Archive at WGDR. org until Thursday, August 2nd.
