The wait is almost over! This weekend, the ultimate test of man and machine hits the small screen as the first episode of the three-part Build for Off Road Adventure Ride special premieres this Saturday, December 20, on MotorTrend TV!

Hosted by renowned fabricator Ian Johnson, this epic season finale special puts a lineup of custom-built rigs – from full-size trucks to highly specialized rock crawlers – to the ultimate test on some of the most challenging off-road trails in the American Southwest.

Joining the Adventure Ride for the Big Bear kickoff was Dupli-Color’s Brian Suter. Brian, whose long-term relationship with Brenton Productions made participating a priority, wasn’t just there to represent the brand—he was about to receive a rock-crawling baptism by fire.

When you’re smashing through rocks and tackling high-desert heat on an intense trip like the Build for Off Road Adventure Ride, morale is everything. But let’s be real: no one wants to go hangry on the trail. Being able to keep cool drinks and fresh provisions within arm’s reach is absolutely crucial—especially when a mechanical breakdown or massive obstacle keeps you away from base camp for hours.

With Dometic as an official sponsor, the Adventure Ride crew had a massive advantage. From rugged coolers and smart storage solutions for trail-side beverages and quick snacks, to a fully-equipped mobile basecamp with hot meals at the end of the day, Dometic created the ultimate off-road oasis for the participants.

They didn’t just provide gear; they delivered essential creature comforts that you may not think to pack, but which become non-negotiable necessities in remote locations.

The Build for Off Road Adventure Ride isn’t just about conquering trails; it’s about a shared passion for the off-road community. And as it turns out, one of the most exciting rigs coming on the ride has a unique shared history between two of the participating drivers!

Recently, the Two Guys Garage Podcast brought together a few of the Adventure Ride participants, inviting Build for Off Road host Ian Johnson from Big Tire Garage and Nate Pickel of “Dirt LifeStyle” to join podcast hosts Kevin Byrd and Willie B to talk about the trip. They discussed everything from their vehicle prep to what they’re most looking forward to on the ride route, and gave us the inside scoop on Nate’s one-of-a-kind rig.

While much of the focus for the Build for Off Road Adventure Ride has been on the rock-crawling rigs tackling the most punishing trails, support trucks also play a crucial role in expeditions like this. Even if these vehicles aren’t attempting white-knuckle obstacles like Backdoor in Johnson Valley, they still need to be capable of handling challenging off-road terrain, carrying gear, and providing support for the entire crew.

That’s why Factory Five Racing is joining the Adventure Ride and sending its capable XTF test truck into the fray as a pre-runner.

Johnson Valley, home of King of the Hammers, holds many challenges for Ian Johnson and the Build for Off Road Adventure Ride.

“You know, one of the most stressful times for me is before a race, going through the tool bags or packing tool bags,” says Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Famer Brad Lovell, “because you’re trying to plan for the unexpected and get yourself out of a tough situation.”

So far, we’ve heard from three experienced off-road drivers who will tackle the Build for Off Road Adventure Ride in just a few months, and each of them has had something profound to say about breakdowns on the trail.

Breakdowns on an off-road trip are inevitable. What do Ian Johnson, Brad Lovell, and Willie B pack in their toolboxes for trailside fixes?

Willie B’s CJ7 Gets Geared Up on Truck U !

If you’ve been following the journey of Willie B’s 1983 CJ7, you know this classic Jeep started out as the ultimate underdog of the off-road trails. Snagged for a mere $3500, Willie quickly transformed this diamond in the rough into a surprisingly capable off-roader with some clever, budget-friendly upgrades.

But with the Build for Off Road Adventure Ride on the horizon, it was time for this budget-friendly build to evolve into a true beast capable of conquering the challenging route Ian from Big Tire Garage recently outlined through the diverse terrains of Big Bear, Johnson Valley, and Kingman.

Get a behind-the-scenes look at Willie B's CJ7 in the Truck U shop as the guys get it ready for the Build for Off Road Adventure Ride!
