FRANKLIN - The reigning Division IV Non-Select state champions advanced to their third consecutive LHSAA March Madness Top 28 state basketball tournament on Friday, with a 51-48 win over the Haynesville Golden Tornados, at the Hornets
nest.
The Hornets will face East Iberville in the semi-finals, Monday, March 10, at 6:15 p.m., in Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles.
Hornets Head Basketball Coach Tremayne Johnson said
afterward, Haynesville was a good team.
"What we saw on film was what we got. They did everything they were supposed to do, to try and win the game," Johnson said.
"The difference was that our guys were battle-tested and not rattled at all. I think being in the quarterfinals previously, helped us."
It didn't even matter that Haynesville jumped out to an early lead over Franklin as the Hornets started out slow and fell behind.
Johnson said he had no answers for what happened
early in the game.
"But we adjusted to that and we came out all right."
Haynesville led 16 to 13 at the end of the first quarter,
before Franklin stormed back in the second quarter to mark a 30-22 lead at the half.
Then later, they extended the lead to 40-29 by the end of the third quarter.
"I told them at halftime to stay composed," Johnson said. "I told them that we have one more half to play. "
And Franklin needed all of that second half.
Haynesville slowly cut into the lead and eventually narrowed it down to one point with just under three minutes left in the game.
But Franklin survived the run and kept a modest three point lead over the final couple of minutes.
When asked if his team felt any pressure in the game, Johnson said no. "We don't feel pressure."
On Monday, the No. 2 seed Hornets will take on the No. 6 seed East Iberville.
"We are just going to continue to do the same thing that we have been doing all season," Johnson said.
"Nothing changes for us. It's worked so far."
