Handicapped Children

There was a video on Facebook about a handicapped girl being bullied by other girls. They were putting things in her hair. I only saw a couple of seconds as I thought it was horrific. When I was a young girl I lived in Boston with my grandparents. When the weather was nice, we would take the bus to Castle Island. It was a nice place for a picnic and to swim in the ocean. It had a large castle that at one time defended the area. On occasion, a group of children would arrive primarily in wheelchairs. They were always nice and I would say hello whenever possible. They would go inside the fortress and I assume enjoy a nice summer's day. Rarely did any of the caretakers walk them around the island so they could socialize. I never understood that but whenever anyone did see them they would at least say hello and be polite. This included all young children. I find it extremely disturbing that young children, teens and even adults find it acceptable to hurt people who cannot defend themselves. In the Good Gus series I included a new character named Katie. She was in a wheelchair. Her father had been transferred to Ft. Stockton, but the base commander allowed him to live off base to not only assist Sheriff Gus but because they did not have a full time doctor. Pecos had Dr. Moore who was always available. Katie arrived in book twenty-two, "The Field Trip." I presented the story as everyone wanting to be her friend and treated her as if she was not unusual. The stories include inventing different styles of games such as dodgeball and baseball so she could participate even though in a wheelchair. The books are a good read in e-book and paperback. Bankysing

Banksying is the newest trend of basically ending a relationship but in even worse terms. There was a song in the 1960's by Neal Sedaka entitled "Breaking up is Hard to Do." It was very popular but it seems in this era it is much worse. Originally people confronted each other and said it was over. Eventually it moved on with the internet with an email. Then along came cell phones and people would text 'the end.' Next came ghosting and finally banksying. I think this is much worse. They completely disappear from the other person's life. Not only that they erase all traces of their relationship. If someone really cared for the other person, this has to be extremely difficult. How do they cope with it? They need time to grieve and get past it. Look what suddently happened to Nicole Kidman. All of a sudden she is getting divorced and Keith Urban is seeing someone else. She didn't even have time to grieve. What is worse is that it is very public and somewhat humiliating for her. What happened to empathy? What I cannot understand is how you can care about a person and then basically toss them aside with no regard for their feelings. Don't you agree? There were none of those terms during the Good Gus era. Treating each other with respect was key both in that time and as part of the series. It is available in paperback and e-book. Nicole Kidman

No one really knows what is happening and what did happen between Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban. What we do know is that he is publicaly embarassing and humiliating her. They were married for many years and had children together. She stayed by him over the years when he had various issues. That may be part of it . She was devoted and loyal to him duiring his ups and downs and now he is no longer interested in her. Numerous people like her both fans and celebrities. I always thought she was too good for him and now I guess I am right. What many people are disliking is that this embarassment is so public. If you want to get revenge do it privately. Why must it be so public? We all have issues in life and there are so many YouTube reels about people being humiliated, name called and other forms of revenge to get even. I see no point in revenge. It is just not worth it. Many people find it delightful, but it is their choice. There were even articles today about people not understanding the revenge by Keith to Nicole. Do you? There are no stories with revenge in the Good Gus series. With all the meaness in the world, the Good Gus series are the perfect stories for children with positive efforts to teach the children morals, manners and lessons to be kind. Meeting Children

Where ever I go, children seem to like me. I was in a discount department store recently when a little girl ran up to me and gave me a hug. Her mother was embarrassed and apologized. I told her there was no reason to apologize. Sometimes when I am walking doing grocery shopping children stare and smile at me. I am not wearing my big white hat or my cowgirl clothes and yet they still smile and wave at me. As an author, even though I am not as popular yet as I would like to be, its nice to know that children like me. When I have read in the past, the children always wanted more and didn't want me to leave. It is my greatest joy. There are so many problems particuarly in schools, that is really nice to see smiling faces. Of course, they always ask me many questions such as, "Did you ride your horse here? Where is your horse?" My goal in the Good Gus series is to make reading enjoyable and teach children about kindness to others. The problem with today and this includes school is that many of the courses include the use of computers. I like books to trigger a child's imagination, don't you? National Coffee Day

I did not know that there was a National Coffee Day. I also didn't know that many companies are giving free coffee today. I really love coffee. I started drinking it when I was three years old. I lived with my grandparents and it was their staple hot drink except for tea in the afternoon. When I was young they would bring me and my curly haired doll to the beach. Our picnic lunch always consisted of crab meat sandwiches and coffee prepared with cream and sugar. During those years there were no coolers so my grandmother wrapped the hot coffee in a glass jug wrapped in two hot towels. It was always really tasty. It's still one of my favorite meals today. Coffee was a staple in the old west as well. The cowboys, particularly on the cattle drives, drank hot coffee with their meals at the campfires. There are no pictures of the old fashioned coffee pots in any of the Good Gus Series books. Even in book three, "Cory Returns," as Sheriff Gus, Cory and Ray the Blacksmith sit by the camp fire, I was negligent in that I did not have the illustrator add a coffee pot. All the old western movies and television shows had a coffee pot on their camp fires. When anyone from the old west went into a restaurant, one of the first questions the waitress would ask would be "Coffee?" Even today, in the movies or television shows, if a character sits down at a diner, the "Coffee" questions along with a cup and saucer is offered first. Have you ever gone camping and made hot coffee? Even the instant version somehow tastes great. When your thoughts travel to the old west, cowboys, cowgirls, or even camping, and you are looking for a different western style book to read to a child, please consider the Good Gus Series. Special

We all believe we are special, but are we really? In most cases we are and believe we are. However, there are children that grew up who believed they are extremely special and entitled. The problem with those children who become adults is that they believe their self importance was significant compared to everyone else. I am sure you have seen the reels on social media about kids particularly teens, and it doesn't matter whether girls or boys, who generally bully or pick on other teens and humiliate them. They have to stand out and be noticed while insulting the other teens. Have you ever noticed that they always need to be the center of attention? They probably were as children and now as teenagers they want even more recognition. One other act I could never stand was how they all acted as if they knew everything. If they did they would focus on their books and studying instead of cheating or faking it. In many of the Facebook reels, the teens and adults only care about themselves. I don't know about you, but they seem as if they are not the type of people you would even want to know. One of the things that they do which I cannot stand is to act as if all rules do not apply to them. How many times have you seen it in reels and TV shows? In the Good Gus series all the children behaved in a proper manner. The only cowboy out of line was Bad Bart but Sheriff Gus squared him away. All Seasons

Yesterday, in the middle of a work day, my mouse decided to die so I had to go to a large discount department store immediately. As I walked down the aisle to the electronics section, I suddenly saw all the cards for all of the seasons. They literally had Halloween cards, Thanksgiving cards and Christmas cards. I really couldn't believe within a couople of weeks. It's just too soon. For each time of year we need to savor and enjoy those moments. In many parts of the world, winter is cold with rain, snow, sleet and freezing temperatures. It's part of the reason that the tropical islands are so appealing because people can escape, if only briefly, the cold weather. There are parts of the world where winter is mild. For the cold sections, people tend to utilize the mountainous resorts for snow skiing and snowboarding. Of course, cold weather makes all of us think of hot chocolate. In Ireland, the halloween decorations are on display until the last day of October. The first day of November begins the Christmas decorations. They remain until the end of December. They obviously do not have Thanksgiving as that is an American holiday celebrating the first meal between the native Americans and the future citizens of the country. Decorating for the fall I include dried colored leaves along with anything festive that shows the changing of the colors of the leaves. This is true in both America and Ireland. Spring arrives much earlier in the milder locations rather than in the cold sections of the world. I love February in Ireland as the trees begin to blossom and that is also true in Washington, D.C. for the cherry blossom season. In the Good Gus series, greeting cards were not utilized even though they started in the fifteenth century. Reading to your child at night is an ideal way to present them to the stories in both paperback and e-book. "Misplaced Trust had its own issues all seasons. Workslop

I just saw today the term workslop which is basically AI non productive work. AI isn't exactly replacing jobs. It looks like work that is AI driven but in reality it is basically nothing. It looks like it was work crafterd by humans but in reality it is just AI. It is not worth it. The truth is that it lacks meaning, style and even a semblance of craftmanship. Many sites are using AI to develop real craftmanship, but in reality it is just a mess of nothng. According to statistis, companies are spening per individual a minimum of two hours to square this away and make it decent. In reality it is costing them nine million per year. As much as they talk about the greatness they all talk about with AI, the truth is, we as humans, are still superior. Right now it is not perfect or even close to it but over time, it will take over. When it comes to many areas of empoyment, it can't cover everything. What I dislike is that it wants to write for us in our books, and blogs. I resent it as we utilize what we read and seem to try to render our own opionions. I don't think it works, do you? As workslop and AI are new terms they did not exist during the Good Gus era. Convenient

Have you ever felt like a companion, or partner of convenience? That is often the problem with many couples. Have you found that one side doesn't make the effort to communicate unless they want something or to let you know they won't be home? I have seen numerous reels where primarily the husbands just can't be bothered and frequently say they won't be home until late. Often, the wife or partner will secretly follow them and find out that they are actually otherwise engaged and they are only good for a paycheck, cooking, cleaning and taking care of the home and children. Often they cancel plans with you and/or the famly at the last minute. Again, they cite work. I saw a reel one time in which the wife had her neighbor take her kids to the town fair and she secretly followed her husband. He was meeting up with a woman having a fancy dinner. Another thing they do is speak in vaguries.You are never really sure what is going on or even if they are at work. Whatever friends they have you don't know them. They may go to ball games and you have no clue. They automatically dismiss your feelings so it is pointless even talking about them. It simply boils down that you feel better when they are not home. You feel less alone. Do you know anyone like that? Everyone was convenient in the Good Gus series. They all pulled togther. The series is good reading in e-book or paperback. Restaurants

Once there were restaurants that are no more. One of my favorites was Soup Plantation in California. They had delicious salads that the whole family loved. The price was reasonable too. Sadly, they are gone. They had different names in Nevada and Arizona. A few restaurants tried to duplicate them but it was impossible. What I liked was that when my kids were teens I would take them for soup and salad which was a perfect healthy choice. I don't know if A & W Rootbeer is still around. My family loved their rootbeer. There were buffets in the west and particularly Las Vegas. They are all gone now. Many people loved TCBY. It was very popular in Florida. I knew a man's brother who had a few franchises. Health food is not really the rage now. Fudruckers was a very popular burger restaurant particularly in California. It was slightly upsale and pricey. Bennigans was the very poplar Irish style of TGI Fridays. The food was good and it was very popular on St. Patrick's Day. Of course, everywhere is popular on St. Paddy's Day incluidng a time when I lived Ireland.Steak and Ale was always good for a client lunch or dinner. Everyone ate steak so it was always the perfect restaurant. The first time we went to San Diego to see my mother-in-law we all went to Farrell's. It was once a great ice cream shop. There really aren't any more. One restaurant is coming back and that is Roy Rogers. It was very popular in California. Have you lost a favorite restaurant? The only restaurant that was in Pecos was Mary's. There was also Bob's Swet Shop which had ice cream. Two nice shops to read about in the Good Gus series in paperback or e-book. Mean Spirited TV

I watched a movie the other day entitled "Change of Heart." It starred Lindsay Wagner and John Ratzenberger. One of the characters was a writer for a TV show and as she pointed out, "We don't do mean spirited TV." She was supposed to go to a spa but her car broke down in the rain. She ended up at an Inn and fell in love with the Inn, the food, the staff and the owner. Her boss decided that he should do an interview of the Inn as he believed it was run down. The truth was this host felt he was the top star who was mean spirited. When it came time for the show the day before the girl who had been staying at the Inn found a way to basically tattle on the mean host. He was livid as he felt this was his chance for high ratings. His boss ordered him to do a nice show. The producer told him that was not the way to increase ratings and reminded him that they did not do mean spirited TV. He walked out and another girl who wanted a real chance at being host was chosen instantly by the producer. What the producer said was true. Even today there are just too many mean spirited TV shows, don't you agree? Since TV wasn't invented yet in the Good Gus series, there weren't any shows only radio and wholesome plays by the school children. It could be just the book to make a child fall asleep in e-book and paperback. In "Misplaced Trust" TV wasn't the issue just mean spirited people. Relax in the cool breeze and read in e-book form.
