Rich Rodriguez’s first season back at West Virginia didn’t go as planned, or at least live up to the expectations of fans. There were highs, but there were a lot of lows. The Mountaineers finished the season 4-8, third to last in the Big 12, and capped off the season with a 49-0 loss to No. 5 Texas Tech.

There were glimmers of hope throughout the season, but if you look at the record and the product on the field in WVU’s final game, there might not be much optimism for Year 2.

The emergence of guard Gia Cooke continued Monday.

The Houston transfer, who actually began her career at Maryland, was not a starter for West Virginia to start the season. Ever since, Cooke has continued to develop into one of the Mountaineers’ most dependable scorers.

That was the case again during No. 21 WVU’s 83-63 victory against McNeese State, inside the Baha Mar Convention Center, in the opening round of the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship in Nassau, The Bahamas.

West Virginia suffered another loss, in a close winnable game, and is officially knocked out of bowl contention. The hopes of playing any more games after Texas Tech are over. There’s nothing really to play for other than pride and finishing off on a high note.

For the seniors, Texas Tech will be their last game at the college level, so winning the final game, against a caliber of opponent like the Red Raiders in front of the Milan Puskar Stadium crowd, would be special.
