Threat of tornados increases slightly for Lewis County on Wednesday afternoon

The rare possibility of tornado activity in Lewis County remains minor but has increased, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Seattle told emergency responders across the state during a
weather briefing earlier today.
Most of Lewis County now has a five percent to nine percent chance of seeing a tornado tonight as a strong thunderstorm moves in, NWS Warning Coordination Meteorologist Reid Wolcott said noting that earlier predictions placed those odds at between 2 percent and 4 percent.
And while the tornado threat remains fairly minor, the probability of large hail and severe winds pummeling the region remains significant, Wolcott said in a press statement. “The storms that
we’re seeing have the potential to do some damage,” he said.
The storm system remains on track to reach Lewis County around 4 or 5 p.m. today, he said, and it’s expected to last one to two hours in most locations.
The most significant concern is the possibility of large hail. Nearly all of Lewis County faces a 15 percent to 29 percent chance of hail measuring one inch or more in diameter, and most of the
county has a 10 percent chance of hail reaching two inches or more in diameter.
The storm may bring wind gusts of up to 58 mph, with a five percent to 14 percent risk of these high winds affecting the area.
There is a five percent to nine percent chance of tornados.
Urban areas with poor drainage may experience localized flooding.
Wolcott noted that winds likely will be “gusty and erratic and may come from any direction.” He also warned that intense rainfall could lead to 1 to 1.5 inches of accumulation per hour in some
areas.
Residents are urged to remain alert and take necessary precautions to protect themselves during the severe weather. The NWS, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce, National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and weather.com, provides the following recommendations to stay safe during the storm:
• Stay weather ready: Keep tuned to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio for real-time updates on severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.
• At your house: If you hear a severe thunderstorm warning, go to a secure location, away from windows. If time permits, bring pets to safety as well.
• At work or school: Stay away from windows and avoid large open spaces like cafeterias or auditoriums. Seek shelter in interior rooms if a storm is approaching.
• Outside: Seek shelter immediately in a sturdy building. Sheds and outdoor structures are not safe. Avoid standing under trees, as they can fall or increase the risk of being struck by lightning.
• In a vehicle: While safer than being outside, vehicles should still be driven to a secure shelter if time allows.
According to the Washington Emergency Management Division (EMD), tornados can appear suddenly then stop. “If you are receiving golf ball hail or larger,” EMD recently shared, “you are
near the most dangerous part of a severe storm which could be followed by a tornado.”
EMD suggests individuals use the mnemonic device “DUCK” in the case of a tornado:
• Down to the lowest level
• Under something sturdy
• Cover your head
• Keep in the shelter until the storm has passed.

The storm is expected to arrive around 4 or 5 p.m. tonight and last one to two hours. All of Lewis County is at risk for the severe weather, with specific concerns about hail, wind, possible
tornados and localized flooding.
For more information on the storm and severe weather preparedness, residents are encouraged to monitor official sources, including the National Weather Service and local emergency
management authorities.
Lewis County residents and visitors also are encouraged to sign up for the county’s emergency messaging system, Lewis County Alert – which provides updates regarding police, fire, severe weather and health and safety emergencies – by going online to
member.everbridge.net/453003085613586/new.
DO NOT CALL 911 with questions. Instead, please contact Lewis County Emergency Management at 360-740-1151. Residents are encouraged to avoid calling 911 unless they are facing a life-threatening emergency.

2025 Special Election Results
White Pass replacement levy not finding voter approval; LCFD 17 merger passes

There were only two measures on the Feb. 11 Special Election ballot that affected East Lewis County voters – and only a select handful of voters at that as the measures dealt with specific locations in Mineral and Randle. Only registered voters living within the affected areas are eligible to vote on the measures.

The White Pass School District No. 303, School Programs and Operations Replacement Levy is currently failing with 496 votes for (48.82 percent) and 520 votes against (51.18 percent).

The Fire District 17 Big Creek-Mineral Merger into Pierce County Fire Protection No. 23 is currently passing with 64 votes for (91.43 percent) and 6 votes against (8.57 percent).

Both the White Pass School District Replacement Levy and the Fire District 17 Merger Proposition require 50 percent plus one of voter support to pass.

For a complete listing of all Lewis County election results, go online to the Lewis County Auditor’s Office website and select “current elections” from the menu on the left.

The election results will be finalized by the Lewis County Auditor’s Office on Friday, Feb. 21.
