Sunday’s soccer match between Idaho and Eastern Washington had about everything you’d expect from a late-in-the season Big Sky matchup— up and down the field play, jockeying with referees, complaints and cheers from fans, big goals, and diving saves.

In the end, Idaho’s snipers struck with precision and the Vandals defeated Eastern Washington at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome in Moscow, 3-2.

The Vandals took a 1-0 lead into the half following a score by Calli Chiarelli, who scored her third goal, assisted by Georgia Whitehead.

The Eagles took the lead In the second half behind goals by Kendall Moore and Audrey Schlotfeldt.

Idaho kept working, and then struck twice late in the match.

Sara Rodgers redirected a corner kick from Tori Peters at 82:39 to tie the match, and then Rodgers fed Karli Yoshida-Williams, who put the Vandals ahead at 84:24.

Eastern Washington finished with 14 shots, 10 on goal, while Idaho had 10 shots, 6 on goal.

The Vandals had seven corner kicks to three for the Eagles.

The Vandals are in third place in conference standings.

It had been a joyous Homecoming-- downtown Moscow was "Vandalized" in bright colors, students jammed the streets for the serpentine, the bonfire, the fireworks-- but then came the football game.

Idaho lost to Northern Colorado, 49-33, after trailing 35-17 at halftime, leaving a crowd of 12,902 fans disappointed, to say the least.

"We were not good enough as a coaching staff," coach Thomas Ford, Jr., said in the post-game press conference. "We were not good enough as a defense, offense, or special teams. Obviously, the buck starts with me. We've got to do a better job getting these guys prepared."

The Vandals pulled to within 35-25 in the second half and then again at 42-33, but UNC responded each time.

Northern Colorado's offense racked up 482 total yards and scored on seven of its first nine drives.

UNC's Eric Gibson Jr. threw for 350 yards with two touchdowns, completing 22 of 34 passes.

Idaho backup quarterback Jack Wagner passed for 237 yards and Rocco Koch had two touchdowns and 81 yards rushing for the Vandals.

Quarterback Joshua Wood had been ruled out prior to the game, along with seven other players. Elisha Cummings and Michael Graves did return.

Idaho (2-4, 0-2) has little wiggle room left in terms of making the post-season for the fourth consecutive season.

"We've still got six conference games left," Ford said. "Our goal is to go 6-0 on the rest of this season and look back on this as a distant memory."

Idaho plays at Eastern Washington on Oct. 18.

"That was just amazing," Kiefer said during an MPSF Athletics interview on Oct. 1. "I'll be there again. Very excited. It's a great way to mix up racing instead of doing the same races over and over."

This year’s field will be the largest in the three years of the event, featuring nearly 200 collegiate swimmers across 20 universities, The MPSF held the nation’s first open water intercollegiate conference championship in 2023.

Inside the Vandals

The Vandals football team (2-3) returns home on Saturday, October 11th to host the Northern Colorado Bears (2-3) in a Big Sky matchup at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome, for their 2025 Homecoming game.

Despite sharing a conference, the Vandals and Bears have only met on the gridiron three times before, with the Vandals winning twice. Idaho won the last matchup 27-13 back in 2023.

The Vandals had a week of rest coming off a 41-30 defeat against #4 ranked Montana, and are looking to snap a two game losing streak.

Speaking about the loss to Montana, Coach Thomas Ford, Jr. said, "...it was a very hard fought game, and I am very proud of our team for the way they played and fought."

The Vandals are ranked #11 in the Stats Perform poll, and 13th in the FCS Coaches poll, and have not played a home game since September 13th. Coach Ford stressed how much his team feeds off the energy at home.

“Anytime we can play in front of the Kibbie Dome crowd it's a blessing. We're very excited to be back at home," Ford said Monday "...two back to back road games and then a bye week, so it's almost been a month since we've been able to play in front of our home crowd....our defense really feeds off that home crowd...homecoming is always a special time."

The Bears are unranked in the FCS polls, and are also coming off a bye week. They are coached by Ed Lamb, and are led by key offensive players QB Eric Gibson, Jr., WR Carver Cheeks, and RB Mathias Price. On defense, they are led by their leader in tackles S Cam Chapa, and sack leader DL Ezra Ekuban. DB Darrel Bryant, Jr. leads the Bears in interception return yards.

Be on the lookout for the Vandals to have success running the football, as the Bears surrendered 289 rushing yards in a 26-18 loss against Idaho State in their most recent game. Vandals RB Eli Cummings is also set to return from injury, and has looked strong in practice.

QB Joshua Wood, WR Ryan Jezorio, the Vandals RB duo and Idaho’s dynamic defense will look to ignite the Homecoming crowd when the game kicks off on Saturday, 10/11 at 2 p.m. PT inside the P1FCU Kibbie Dome in Moscow.
