Mason Kearns was steps from his apartment door, playing with a ball, when he was hit by a “river” of water rushing down a cul-de-sac Thursday between the apartments and town houses on Watersville Road in Mount Airy.

Fifty first responders struggled in vain to free the 13-year-old from an open drain pipe where he got trapped, and the boy died. The storm dropped more than 4 inches of rain in an hour on Mount Airy, and the town was one of the hardest-hit areas in Maryland that night.

With Mason’s death weighing heavily over the town’s Monday night council meeting, officials said they would help property owners assess every drainage pipe in town. Mayor Larry Hushour said he would launch an Inclement Weather Task Force as well.

The boy’s aunt, Allison Eggleston, passed out photos of the grassy area where Mason died to council members and cited a ProPublica report on storm-drain deaths during heavy floods. She said his “tragic death … should have been prevented.”

Our country is experiencing more frequent natural disaster weather-related events, and the Mount Airy region is no exception. It is on that point that I submit the following for residents to consider. I am proposing the procurement, installation and operation of an air siren alert system for the four corners region of Mount Airy. I have spent the last couple of days eliciting supporting statements from the town residents and businesses that anchor and draw customers into our town. I have written the CEOs of three anchors in the three shopping centers in our town asking for support letters for this initiative.

In November 2018, an EF-1 tornado, confirmed by the National Weather Service, caused significant damage in Mount Airy, particularly impacting the Twin Arch Shopping Center. The tornado, which initially touched down in northwest Howard County, moved north into Carroll County, affecting areas around Pheasant Ridge before reaching Mount Airy. This event impacted businesses and residents in this region, which suffered structural damage and loss of power. Thankfully, no one was hurt significantly or killed. We may not be so lucky next time.

Mount Airy needs a disaster warning siren system, writes Joshua Marks.

Not your imagination, huge enforcement Saturday!

On Saturday, troopers from Waterloo, Frederick, and Hagerstown were out on I-70, working together to keep our roads safe from Howard to Washington counties.

In just 24 hours, their efforts led to:
✅ 233 citations & warnings
✅ 5 arrests for suspected DUI
✅ FOUR drivers stopped for going over 89 MPH in just 40 minutes by one Hagerstown trooper.

State Troopers are out there every day making sure you and your loved ones get home safely. Help us out — slow down, drive sober, and stay alert. Let’s keep ’s roads safe together.

We are saddened to share the passing of one of our volunteer’s family members.

A candlelight vigil will be held tomorrow night (Sunday) at 8 PM at Watkins Park.

There will be a donation box located at our firehouse (702 N. Main St) for gift cards and monetary donations to assist with covering the cost of food for the family during this time. Please only donate gift cards from local Mount Airy restaurants and grocery stores. We are unable to accept pre-made food. Please ring the doorbell to the firehouse so that the crews can receive your donations.

This is the official gofundme link to cover funeral, memorial, and other related expenses. https://gofund.me/e312c4c7
