In 2010, I gathered a group of artistically minded friends and community members to discuss forming a committee to spearhead building an amphitheater in the old movie theater lot on the 300 block of Market St. We called ourselves Art and Community Together(ACT).
In 2011, I went before then Mayor Tom Meeks, and the City Council, to discuss the options available for use and construction on the lot. I received a lot of positive feedback during our meetings, including the formal City Council meeting, but was asked to wait for a decision following the election in the coming months.
After the City Election, discussed in the attached article, we were not allowed to continue on the project. However, the City did move on with the project, and I applaud the work that has been done thus far.
Several weeks ago, I became aware that the City was planning to begin construction on a stage design that was used to win a fundraising competition for the Uptown Amphitheater. Myself and several others voiced concerns last year when the design was made public, and urged the City's Amphitheater Committee to accept public input.
This Thursday, Sept. 21st, the City, through their Committee, will hold it's first public input meeting on the project before they begin construction on the site. Personally, I couldn't be more pleased!
I urge my fellow Citizens of Wabash County to attend this meeting. More input and support from our community can only help to make this project the best that it can be for Uptown Mt. Carmel!
