Sometimes autism shows up in ways people don't typically recognize, and we often misunderstand it.

A delayed response may be processing time.
Direct communication may be clarity, not attitude.
A big reaction to a “small” change may be sensory or routine-related distress.

An intense interest may be joy, regulation, and connection.

The more we understand, the less we mislabel.
Autism does not always match the stereotype, and support gets better when we pause, observe, and ask what the behavior may be communicating.

Because acceptance starts with understanding. 💙

ABA Would You Rather? 🌼

When managing escape maintained behavior, would you rather…
Facilitate a break at the first sign of precursor behavior?

OR

Teach the learner a functional way to request a break, reinforce that communication, and gradually build tolerance for returning to the task?

One option may prevent escalation in the moment.
The other builds a long term skill.

Breaks matter. Regulation matters. But if we only remove the demand every time early signs of distress show up, we may accidentally strengthen escape as the most reliable response.

The goal is not to force compliance.
The goal is to teach communication, honor appropriate break requests, and carefully shape tolerance for returning to expectations in a way that is safe, ethical, and individualized.

So… what would you rather do?

Stop teaching compliance.
Start teaching coping. 🧠✨

In clinical ABA, the goal should never be a learner who simply “does what they’re told.”

The goal is a learner who can move through hard moments with support, safety, communication, and dignity.

Waiting.
Transitions.
Denied access.
Changes in routine.
Mistakes.
Difficult tasks.

These are not just “compliance moments.”
They are opportunities to teach meaningful coping skills.

Can the learner ask for help?
Request a break?
Use a timer?
Choose an alternative?
Tolerate a short delay?
Recover after frustration?
That is the work.

Good ABA does not just reduce behavior.
It builds skills that help learners navigate real life.
Because the goal is not robotic responding.
The goal is functional coping, supported communication, and dignity centered behavior change.

When the meme is meming!!! 😂

A little reminder to celebrate the small wins, give yourself permission to make mistakes, and laugh whenever you can.

Sometimes laughter makes the work feel lighter, the day feel easier, and the passion behind what we do feel a little stronger.

So take the win. Laugh at the meme. Keep learning. Keep growing. Keep behavior hacking.

May the 4th…and the data…be with you. ⚔️✨

Today we’re putting the FORCE in reinFORCEment. ⭐️
In honor of May the 4th, we’re taking ABA to a galaxy far, far away with our Behavior Hacking YouTube video: “Unleashing the Force of Behavior Analysis in the Star Wars Universe.”

Because let’s be honest, even Jedi training has behavior analytic principles written all over it.
From reinforcement to behavior change, skill acquisition, motivation, and the power of a well crafted BIP, the Star Wars universe gives us plenty to analyze. And with strong data, a solid team, and maybe a little help from the Force, meaningful behavior change is always possible.

Happy May the 4th! ⚔️🌌

Shaping is not just for structured ABA sessions.

It is a behavior change procedure used to teach new skills by reinforcing successive approximations toward a target behavior.

Instead of waiting for the full skill to occur, shaping allows clinicians, caregivers, educators, and leaders to reinforce progress as the learner moves closer to the expected response.

This can apply to communication, independence, social responding, vocational skills, exercise routines, classroom participation, and daily living skills.

The key is clinical precision:
-Define the terminal behavior.
-Identify the learner’s current skill level.
-Reinforce approximations that move closer to the goal.
-Systematically shift reinforcement as the behavior improves.

Shaping reminds us that complex behavior is built, not demanded.
