Orphans beat Rams - CHS Coaches Show Tonight!
The Orphans and Rams met for the final time as South Seven Conference foes Friday night and what a classic it was! The Centralia Orphans scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to comeback and beat Mt.Vernon 48-44 at Evers Field.
The Rams scored on their opening drive, a 32-yd run by RB JaShawn Staples to make it 7-0. The Orphans would answer on their opening drive with a 1-yd TD run by RB Will Stanton, the Orphans two point conversion failed and it was 7-6 Rams.
Mt.Vernon didn't take long to extend their lead, a 54-yd TD from Staples and it was 13-6. Centralia's next drive, a long drive helped by several unsportsman calls on the Rams would end with a 7-yd TD catch from Kruz Jackson, the score was 13-13 at the end of 1Q.
Two minutes into the second quarter Mt.Vernon would get a 1-yd TD run from QB CJ Hughes-Disroe Jr to make it 20-13. The Orphans would answer on a 41-yd TD pass from Archie Goewey to Zaidyn McClain to tie it at 20. Mt.Vernon would then dominate the rest of the second quarter scoring 31 points, capped by a 44-yd field goal to the the half up 44-20.
Centralia would come out in the second half and get a touchdown by McClain and a successful 2-point conversion and it was 44-28. The Orphans would get a 41-yd TD from Kenny Bratton late in the 3Q to make it 44-34 Rams.
Mt.Vernon would try a fake punt to start the 4th and that didn't work and the Orphans had the ball in Rams territory that would end on a 5-yd TD pass from a scrambling Archie Goewey to Jace Brammier to make it 44-41. The Orphans defense would stop the Rams on their next drive and get the ball back. RB Will Stanton found the end zone on an 8-yd run with 51 seconds left to take the lead 48-44. Mt.Vernon's final possession would end with an interception by Kenny Bratton to secure the Orphans win.
(6-2) Centralia has clinched a playoff spot and will host (4-4) Effingham Friday night at 7:00 pm. The CHS Coaches Show is tonight at 6:00 pm.
