Two completely bonkers weeks, but .z and I finally recorded Stockhausen's MANTRA and John Liberatore's Sedgeflowers at . So grateful for Ryan Streber's laser-tipped ears, John's gorgeous and sensitive music, Andrew's magnificent musicianship, and, of course, KS for balancing entire galaxies on the tip of the pen.

Dan Lippel at New Focus had some very kind words for Oktaven 2.0- I'll share them here, as the build has been an arduous journey and we're delighted with the outcome.

It's been extremely exciting to be part of a few sessions over the last month at Ryan Streber and Jessica Slaven's amazing new Oktaven Audio studio in nearby Mt. Vernon, NY. They've built a truly special, top level studio to match Ryan's commitment to capturing the best of what we all strive to do. Looking back over the last 12 years, I couldn't be prouder to have had the chance to work closely with such a great musician and colleague during this time, and am so amazed to see what he and Jessica have built. Congrats guys, and anyone who's looking to record in the New York area, consider Oktaven Audio, it's a fabulous place to record!

Fred Hersch

Go check out Fred Hersch at the Vanguard!

This from the current New Yorker: Fred Hersch, celebrating his sixtieth birthday, wears many artistic hats-a dazzling solo pianist, a composer of concert music, and a creator of ambitious multimedia projects-but his trio remains an integral element of his musical identity. The latest iteration of the band, now in its fifth year, features the bassist John Hebert and the drummer Eric McPherson, with whom the leader communicates on a second-sight level. It’s a wrap! Yesterday we recorded Brown’s gorgeous “Just Visible in the Distance”, composed for us and soon to be part of our new American composers’ album. Thanks as always to Oktaven Audio’s Ryan Streber for the stellar work! Pictures courtesy of Elizabeth Brown.
We are thrilled to share this video of Sarah Hennies's Clock Dies, which Talea premiered in the TIME SPANS Festival in August 2021. Thanks to the Earle Brown Music Foundation, Four/Ten Media, Oktaven Audio, and Sarah Hennies for working with us on this project!

We are truly moved that 78 people came together and invested a total of $12,795 to produce a new Mimesis Ensemble album. This will support the artistry of 15 musicians and 6 composers, and will enable us to share our work with a worldwide audience. The generosity of each person who contributed is deeply appreciated!

Now, onto the next stage of our project. Our first recording session at Oktaven Audio is scheduled for Apr 7, 2022. We are hard at work practicing until then!

Since we were a little short of reaching our $15,000 goal, we would welcome any additional support through our general Fractured Atlas page. https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/mimesis-ensemble/general_support

Most of the time when I write music I have a visual in my mind, even if the project doesn’t technically call for it, and for me these three pieces – Breathing Underwater, Shiver, and Traveling North – always felt like a set. A trio of imaginary soundtracks for dreamscapes of deep sea waves, icicles, and dewy morning forest, respectively, and love letters to nature. Working with the brilliant Michael McQuilken to translate these visuals inside my brain to images outside it was so fun and rewarding, and I’m so happy to share the beautiful creations he made.

Thank you Nagamag Music Magazine for the wonderful review!

“Listening to neoclassical works like "4 Rhapsodies" we instantly realize that music is like a message from God. Grab this oportunity to enjoy beautiful, virtuoso piano with elegant melody and flow of sound. Exquisite composition.”

“Слушая подобные неоклассические произведения мгновенно осознаёшь, что музыка, как и человек — от Бога. Прекрасное, виртуозное исполнение фортепианной партии, изящная мелодия которой льётся бурлящей рекой. Изысканная композиция.”

It’s a wrap! Delighted to have finished recording the complete string quartets of Alvin Singleton, including “Hallelujah Anyhow”, written for us thanks to a Chamber Music America commission. Grateful for the invaluable help from the team at Oktaven Audio; photographer John Gurrin; and financial support from New Music USA and The Aaron Copland Fund for Music recording grant. We were especially lucky to be able to record all sessions under Alvin’s supervision. Stay tuned for news of the release!
