Thrilled to release this new music video of Those Secret Eyes, by Charlotte Bray -- a year in the making!
We recorded this in Jordan Hall last spring 2019 -- a time barely recognizable, before sewing masks became a national pastime (and a full time job) - yet the work's haunting themes and steely outbursts remain as relevant as ever.

Tomorrow June 9th begins my online campaign to raise money to finish the recording of my opera The Grey Land. If you are able, I hope you will consider donating to help bring my opera to a world-wide audience this Fall on New Amsterdam Records. The Grey Land features soprano Rebecca Hargrove as a Black mother trying to survive the reality in this land that "never has been yet", with her son actor/narrator Kenneth L. Browning. The opera tells a story of Black humanity, identity, and resilience in the face of the seemingly intractable systemic societal, economic, and cultural forces in today's America.
Check my feed tomorrow for a special video and link to the fundraiser in order to find out more about the opera and to donate. Until then, here is Rebecca singing a moment from Scene 2 "Ferguson: Summer of 2014" at one of our sessions at Oktaven Audio. Video by Donald Martínez

Is classical music really on the ropes? Living in New York City, it's easy to think that is a myth cooked up in the provinces.

Look for most of these labels at good record stores, and there are still a few, especially Downtown Music Gallery in a basement space on Monroe Street in Chinatown. You can also order straight from the labels.

Dan Lippel at New Focus had some very kind words for Oktaven 2.0- I'll share them here, as the build has been an arduous journey and we're delighted with the outcome.
It's been extremely exciting to be part of a few sessions over the last month at Ryan Streber and Jessica Slaven's amazing new Oktaven Audio studio in nearby Mt. Vernon, NY. They've built a truly special, top level studio to match Ryan's commitment to capturing the best of what we all strive to do. Looking back over the last 12 years, I couldn't be prouder to have had the chance to work closely with such a great musician and colleague during this time, and am so amazed to see what he and Jessica have built. Congrats guys, and anyone who's looking to record in the New York area, consider Oktaven Audio, it's a fabulous place to record!
Go check out Fred Hersch at the Vanguard!
This from the current New Yorker: Fred Hersch, celebrating his sixtieth birthday, wears many artistic hats-a dazzling solo pianist, a composer of concert music, and a creator of ambitious multimedia projects-but his trio remains an integral element of his musical identity. The latest iteration of the band, now in its fifth year, features the bassist John Hebert and the drummer Eric McPherson, with whom the leader communicates on a second-sight level.
