Help Protect Idaho’s Public Lands: Wildfire Prevention Is Everyone’s Responsibility

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service Great Basin Unit 1–Boise, in partnership with the BLM Boise District, has responded to 14 shooting related fires since the beginning of 2026. This marks a troubling trend, as shooting related fires are now a significant concern across BLM managed public lands. Of the 28 human caused fires reported so far this year, half were directly linked to shooting activities, and none were caused by lightning. Out of 3,644 acres burned, nearly 1,553 acres were lost to these shooting related incidents alone.

Wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re hiking, camping, or target shooting, please follow fire safety guidelines and stay vigilant. Simple actions like checking fire conditions, avoiding risky behaviors, and keeping water or a fire extinguisher nearby can make a big difference. By working together, we can protect Idaho’s public lands and reduce wildfire risks for everyone.
