MVG ends state’s 14-year drought at annual Pitch championship in Kansas

One of Oklahoma’s longest losing streaks is finally history - thanks to the Mountain View-Gotebo pitch team.
The Mountain View-Gotebo team captured first-place honors at the 72nd Annual Pitch Championship in Sharon Springs, Kansas, for the first time since 2009 recently. The win also marked the first time an Oklahoma team had won a tournament in Sharon Springs since 1960.
The tournament, which pits the top eight teams from the Wallace County (Kansas) Pitch League, and the top teams from MVG, is held in different communities in Kansas each year.
Kansas had won the annual battle the previous 14 years.
The Oklahomans, playing without Hank Frizzell, who had passed away recently, ended the streak with a 223-205 come-from-behind win on March 9.
Prior to the tournament, the Sharon Springs Knights of Columbus hosted both teams and their families for a fish fry at the Parish Hall.
The three Friday evening card sessions started at 7 p.m. It was a back-and-forth evening. Kansas started out six games ahead. Oklahoma rallied to take a 1-point lead in the second session.
