Fountain Window Open!

That rapid inflation tapped the brakes around 6:00 AM, but the stage is set. Current models put the start of Episode 53 fountains between later today, August 12, through Friday, August 14.

We've already clawed back 13.9 microradians of tilt at UWD after taking that 14.4 microradian deflationary hit during Episode 52....pressure is building fast! 🌋🔥

Kīlauea Update: M5.2 Offshore Shake & Episode 53 On Deck

Things are moving fast at the summit. Here is what’s going on right now across the data:

M5.2 Earthquake Offshore: A strong Magnitude 5.2 hit late last night (23:48 UTC-4 / 19:48 HST) about 42 km ESE of Naalehu at a depth of 10.7 km, triggering a sharp vertical spike on the UWD tilt trace.

Rapid Re-Inflation Underway: The Uēkahuna (UWD) tiltmeter flipped back to inflation around 10:30 AM yesterday, gaining over 2 microradians in ~12 hours and charging at roughly 3 µrad/day.

Episode 53 Projected: If this inflation rate holds, HVO projections show Episode 53 could start as early as this Wednsday and no later than Thursday.

Vent & Glow Activity: Moderate glow is visible from the north vent and the new collapse zone above the south vent (which started glowing around 8:45 PM and brightened before 10 PM HST). The main south vent itself remains dark.
