Kīlauea is holding its breath... mostly 🌋

The vents have been quiet the past few days with no overflows, but they're still glowing bright with flames every night. Then at 3:28 AM this morning, the livestream cams caught a small burst of spatter! 👀

The Sept 30 – Oct 1 intrusion hasn't restarted, but small earthquakes keep rumbling under Halemaʻumaʻu and the summit is slowly inflating. Episode 55 fountaining is still possible, and so is new lava breaking out somewhere else inside the caldera if the intrusion picks back up.

Overnight Intrusion Timelapse

This 40-second timelapse runs from the night of September 30 into Thursday morning, during a busy stretch at the summit.

A shallow intrusion of magma moved beneath the summit overnight, near the current eruption site, and was strongest from about 8 PM to 3 AM HST. The tiltmeters jumped, earthquakes picked up, and tremor increased. Meanwhile the north vent put out several large overflows, and the north, south, and west vents all lit up with big flames and spatter. No lava broke out anywhere new, and there's nothing unusual outside the summit.

Episode 55 fountaining is still possible, and the north vent even threw a small dome fountain yesterday afternoon. Watch live with us 24/7 on the Two Pineapples livestream!

Dome Fountain Building!

Things picked up by midday. As of noon HST, a glowing dome fountain is surging from the vent and feeding lava flows across the floor of Halemaʻumaʻu. You can see it on all three cams, V1, V2, and V3.

The summit is still inflating, and there's nothing unusual outside the summit. It's been 35 days since Episode 54 ended. Is this the start of Episode 55? HVO hasn't called it yet, so stay tuned!

We are Navigating!

N vent overflows continue, day 4, with lava flows now also from the south vent. Strong glow across all vents, spatter from N & S vents. No anomalous activity outside summit. Summit still inflating.

As of 5 a.m., Hurricane Nolo was about 260 miles southwest of South Point, moving away from the island at 12 mph. Heavy rain, possible flooding, and strong winds are still expected through today, and cam visibility remains poor.

Ep 55 still possible.

Some very intereing activity fired up this afternoon....Come by and check out the Spatter Show.

Nearly continuous spatter bursts began from the north vent around 6:30 pm HST and have picked up in intensity. Larger bursts are 35-70 feet (10-20 m) high.
