CAPTURED ON CAMPUS: New Mural Depicts The Village's Business History

A mural has been painted on the side of Roots Burger Bar at 1700 W. University Ave. in The Village near Ball State. The artwork depicts several businesses that previously operated in the area. As revitalization efforts continue, the mural serves as a tribute to The Village’s past.

The mural, by artist Ashley Runkle, includes representations of Steck's Apple Tree, a former clothing store, and Smittie's Menswear, which sold men's apparel. Also featured are Uni-Mart Restaurant, which served comfort food including a dish called Beef Manhattan, and Pasquale's Pizza Parlor, which operated where Greek's Pizzeria is currently located. Pasquale's offered a pizza called the "Ball State Special" with sausage, pepperoni, ham, and barbecue sauce.

CAPTURED ON CAMPUS: We stopped by Christy Woods, a 17-acre outdoor classroom and nature area right here on campus. It features forest, prairie, and wetland habitats, giving students a chance to explore and learn about Indiana's native ecosystems up close.

Located on the southwest side of campus near the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse, Christy Woods is used by biology and environmental science classes for hands-on learning, research, and fieldwork. There are walking trails and signs to help visitors understand what they're seeing.

More than just a classroom, Christy Woods is also a quiet space where students, staff, and visitors can enjoy nature. It's a great example of Ball State's focus on learning through experience and caring for the environment.
