Some tips:
1. Don’t wait till you have a high budget music video to post something up.
Of course you want everything you put out to be the highest quality you can, but you still need to post regularly!! You can use tools like TunesToTube to add a picture to an MP3 and post it up without knowing anything about editing video. You can record clips on your phone of you working in the studio, performing or just hanging out. Sometimes having something unpolished is better anyways because it’s more authentic.
2. Use tags
Tags will help make your video pop up when people are searching for music. You can use genres ("rap," "R&B," etc), moods ("uplifting,"angry," etc.), locations ("bay area rap," "iceland hip hop," etc) or similar artists as tags. The trick is to try to find tags that people are searching for, but that not a lot of other videos are already using. Try using a service like TubeBuddy which will give each tag a score so you know if it's good or not.
3. Have contests.
A great way to encourage interaction on your channel is having contests. On smooth Note channel we have a weekly contest where we give away cash prizes to someone who comments. This way we're doing 2 things: creating value for the people watching by giving them something useful to them, and also encouraging interaction which will help boost our channel. Win win!
4. Use cards.
These are the boxes with text you see pop up on videos. You can use them to encourage people to subscribe to your channel, go to your website and check out your other videos. TubeBuddy will add cards to all your videos so you don't have to do it manually.
5. Post on a regular schedule.
Your audience will want more content once they get to know you and your music. Don't leave them hanging, or else they'll go somewhere else for entertainment. Sticking to a regular schedule is a great idea. !
6. Be Patient.
With so much content to compete with, it may take some time before your videos catch on. Keep at it.
