From Alaska to Puerto Rico, Educators Host 200 Events on June 7th, Teach Truth Day of Action to Challenge Full-Scale Assault on Public Education

Fifth annual nationwide rallies and teach-ins, led by educators, students, and local communities, aim to push back against unprecedented and increasing legislative efforts to censor history and restrict learning in K-12 classrooms.

[Washington, DC] – [June 7, 2025] – Today educators, students, parents, and activists across the United States will participate in the fifth annual Teach Truth Day of Action. There will be over 200 events across the nation including the District of Columbia, Florida, South Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, and many others. This nationwide initiative, led by Zinn Education Project (coordinated by Rethinking Schools and Teaching for Change), in partnership with the National Education Association (NEA) and cosponsored by more than 80 prominent national civil rights and advocacy organizations, aims to defend the right to an honest and inclusive education and to resist the rapidly growing government efforts to censor history and restrict learning in K-12 classrooms.

This year’s Day of Action takes place amid a full-scale assault on public education. These activities directly respond to the Department of Education initiative aimed at eliminating public schools and the presidential executive order of eliminating the Department of Education and banning discussions on critical historical and contemporary subjects, including climate change, racism, sexism, LGBTQ+ identity, systemic oppression, and the diverse history of communities within the United States. These attacks have been coupled with state-level censorship laws and local district crackdowns, designed to whitewash history, silence marginalized voices, and intimidate teachers.

Educators and allies are hosting a variety of public events, including rallies at historic sites, people’s history mini-lessons in public spaces, history walking tours, information tables at libraries and community centers, and screenings of award-winning documentaries, such as Banned Together.

“As educators, we have the professional and moral responsibility to defend an accurate, inclusive education and the rights of all of our students, no matter their race, gender identity, or immigration status. We call on all educators, students, families, and public education allies to rise with us,” said NEA President Becky Pringle. “This day of action across the country is a commitment by educators to teach full and accurate U.S. history and current events, and to affirm the humanity of all students. It is a call to raise awareness of the dangers of lying to students about the existence and persistence of structural and systemic racism, and all forms of oppression. This is more than a day of action. It’s a line in the sand. We will not lie to children. We will not erase the past. We will welcome every student — every one — and we will not back down.”

Since 2021, more than 800 pieces of legislation have been introduced across the states aimed at censoring teachers on historic and current topics. Organizers argue that the alarming surge in censorship, a hallmark of authoritarianism, is deliberately eroding the foundations of a well-informed citizenry and threatening democratic principles. The public must fight back by demanding uncensored curricula, supporting educators on the front lines, and actively championing intellectual freedom.

"Education censorship laws are a warning sign of a deeper authoritarian threat — one that aims to control how young people think,” said Seattle educator and Zinn Education Project campaign director Jesse Hagopian. “When the government tries to erase the truth about racism, colonialism, LGBTQIA+ identity, and the climate crisis, they’re not just closing the door on the past — they’re locking students out of the future. Teaching truth hands the keys to the youth, allowing them to unlock their potential to create thriving communities rooted in solidarity."

The Zinn Education Project is providing resources, training, and support for local event hosts and is urging communities to come together to protect the future of democracy and justice by ensuring young people have access to an uncensored education. Event hosts will highlight local histories at risk of being obscured and distribute information to the public on how to defend the freedom to teach and learn.

Why: To advocate for the right to teach and learn an honest, inclusive U.S. history and to oppose censorship in education; to ensure world-class, quality education for our K-12 students.

To protect young people’s right to learn — and by default protect the future of democracy and justice — we need to expose the right’s agenda and be visible in our defense of teaching people’s history. We ask EVERYONE to take a public stand in defense of .

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:

Juneteenth Muncie to Host 6th Annual Celebration on June 14

MUNCIE, IN — The Juneteenth Muncie Committee will host the 6th Annual Juneteenth Muncie Celebration on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 2 to 9 p.m. at McCulloch Park. This free, family-friendly event invites the public to gather in recognition of Juneteenth, a historic day marking the end of slavery in the United States.

The annual celebration continues to grow as a space for reflection, education, and joy. Attendees can expect an afternoon and evening filled with live performances, youth and family activities, local vendors, food, and community engagement opportunities. The event is designed to bring people together across generations and backgrounds in the spirit of unity and cultural appreciation.

“Each year, Juneteenth Muncie brings the community together to honor the past and build a more inclusive future,” said Dorica Watson, co-chair of the Juneteenth Muncie Committee. “This event is a celebration of resilience, freedom, and the power of community.”

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of enslaved African Americans—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The day is recognized nationally as a time to reflect on the nation’s history and to celebrate African American culture and contributions.

Juneteenth Muncie is organized by a local committee dedicated to promoting awareness of African American history and building stronger, more inclusive communities. The 2025 event is presented in partnership with the Indiana Black Expo – Muncie Chapter and Shafer Leadership Academy, the presenting sponsor.

For more information, to volunteer, or to support the event, visit www.JuneteenthMuncie.com or contact event co-chairs Anitra Davis or Dorica Watson at [email protected].

Muncie Downtown Development Partnership (MDDP) invites you to seek the unique during Brink of Summer ArtsWalk, June 5th, featuring Steamroller Printmaking, Flower Hour, and DWNTWN IDOL, sponsored by The Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, Inc.

Tribune Showprint Posters, the nation’s oldest continuously operating letterpress shop, will host Muncie’s first Steamroller Print Event in conjunction with Muncie Downtown Development. Enjoy watching a steamroller roll over the large prints of paper and see the artist's carved work come to life. “I’m so excited for this event,” says Kim Miller, owner of Tribune Showprint. “We were able to bring this event to downtown with the gracious help and partnership from Muncie Downtown Development and the Sherman and Marjorie Zeigler Foundation.”

A kaleidoscope of color returns with Flower Hour, sponsored by Wise Country Market, with flowers provided by Normandy Flower Shop, Inc. Build your bouquet as you enjoy the other activities during this event. The $20 Flower Hour tickets are available for purchase online or at the corner of Charles and Walnut Street during the event.

First Thursday opening party for Aimee Maychack and Michael Prater, Thursday, April 3, 5 - 8 pm: Gordy Fine Art and Framing is proud to highlight the art of two artists, Aimee Maychack and Michael Prater. The party will be on First Thursday, April 3, from 5-8 pm.
The artists will be on hand. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited
to attend.

Aimee is primarily a printmaker who often works with linoleum blocks known as Linocut. A linocut is a type of relief print with a lot of similarities to woodblock printing in the way it yields heavy lines with dramatic and expressive results. Essentially, the artist carves an image into a linoleum block and what's left of the block is inked and printed. Sometimes Aimee adds color using gouache which is an opaque watercolor paint. Aimee is also a flight paramedic on IU Health LifeLine. Sometimes her images are composed with unusual perspective. Her work inside flying helicopters exposes her to these different viewpoints daily and much more than those of us who view the world from ground level.

Michael Prater is well known for his dramatic drawings where he uses heavy black lines to conjure dark images that are lit from an unusual angle with an artificial light source. In this show they are mostly self-portraits that reveal an inner struggle. Michael is Associate Professor of Art Education at Ball State who has experience as a graphic artist. His aggressive approach to drawing yields imagery well suited to visualizing the internal and external toll of aging and the emotions that go with it.

At 6:15, Aimee and Michael will speak about their work and their processes.

The exhibit will be on view with works for sale in the gallery and at gordyframing.com through May 3, 2025.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company promotes talented artists, provides appraisals, restores antique frames, and offers expert design and craftsmanship for framing and displaying treasured family possessions and works of art. Muncie Artists Guild

The Muncie Artists Guild’s featured Artist of the Month for April is Diane Burrell, Painter, Enamellist, and Teacher

Diane’s Life as an artist has evolved over 55 years, yet the source of inspiration has remained constant. She is affected by her surroundings where she lives and works in her home studio on a lake in North Anderson. The abundant ever-present fodder, wildlife, deer, blue herons, eagles, osprey, waterfowl, and fish provide a constant source of tranquility, and subject matter, which is revealed through the exploration and use of color in multiple layers of acrylic paint or enameling, (which is Glass fired onto metal at 1,450 degrees.) Other sources for subject matter come from her dedication to serving others through a food assistance program at Trinity Episcopal church. She is energized by sharing her experiences through teaching and displaying her art.

Diane graduated from Ball State University in 1988. She continued her graduate work through 1995. She is an art teacher with an emphasis in painting, metal design, and enameling. Diane taught art at Daleville Community Schools and is retired from South Madison School Corporation in Pendleton Indiana. She continues to teach classes in painting and enameling to all ages at Pendleton Artist Society, Gallery 119 on a regular basis. Diane has won numerous awards from: the Indiana State Fair, Madison County Artist Society, Pendleton Artist Society, and Muncie Artist Guild and was accepted into the Hoosier Salon.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 12, 2025

Make a Difference: Earn Your Associate of Science in Special Education from Ivy Tech Muncie-Henry County

MUNCIE, Ind. – As of September 2024, there were more than 300 posted open positions for special education teachers in Indiana. To help meet this need, Ivy Tech Muncie-Henry County is one of a few Ivy Tech locations that offers a Special Education program. This program serves as a foundation for accessible and inclusive learning environments through its students. The 60-credit hour, four-semester program is designed to equip aspiring educators with the skills and knowledge they need to transform the lives of students with differing abilities. Future educators complete the program and transfer to a four-year partner to further their education.

“Special education teachers in Delaware and Henry Counties are the cornerstone of inclusive learning environments, ensuring that every student—regardless of their abilities—has the opportunity to thrive. Their dedication transforms classrooms into spaces of empowerment and possibility, where all children can achieve their fullest potential,” Dr. Sarah Haisley, Department Chair for the Elementary Education Program, said.

Transform Lives, One Student at a Time

Special education teachers play a critical role in creating inclusive and empowering learning environments for students with disabilities. From supporting children with dyslexia to helping those with cerebral palsy reach their potential, these educators ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed. The AS in Special Education at Ivy Tech provides foundational training to prepare future educators to recognize the unique strengths and needs of every student, fostering an environment where all children can thrive.

Students choose the program for different reasons. Kamille Chambers, a current Special Education student at the Muncie-Henry County campus, chose the program due to her experience as a special education student. In elementary school, Chambers was diagnosed with ADHD and a learning disability. She was placed in the special education program to support her academic success. In middle school, she was confronted with a harsh truth about being in this program. Her special education teacher at the time told her she would not make it or get far in life due to her ADHD and learning disability. This experience pushed Chambers to join the Special Education program at Ivy Tech.

“I chose the Special Education program to prove that students with special needs and/or disabilities can do what they set their minds to and achieve their goals,” Chambers said.

Program Highlights

60 Credit Hours: Complete the program in just four semesters.
TSAP Designation: As a Transfer Single Articulation Pathway (TSAP) program, students can seamlessly transfer to an Indiana public four-year college or university as juniors, saving up to $10,000 in tuition cost.

Flexible Pathways for Continued Education

Graduates of the Associate of Science in Special Education program can transfer to a bachelor’s program at a four-year institution to further their education. Ivy Tech’s Transfer Advocates are available to guide students through the process and provide personalized support as they take the next step in their academic journey.

A Fast Track to Success

Students can earn their degree in just two years by completing 60 credit hours, which include:

30 General Education Credits
26 Program-Specific Credits
3 Institutional Requirement Credits
1 College Success Credit

By graduation, students are equipped with the core competencies to excel in the classroom and further their education at a four-year university.

“Upon graduating from Ivy Tech's Special Education program, I have been able to further my education at Ball State’s Teachers College, working toward my Bachelor of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). I feel that Ivy Tech did a great job of using hands on learning to a line the courses they offer for an easy transition into Ball State’s expectations,” Wendi Anderson, a 2020 Special Education program graduate, said, “As a graduate from Ivy Tech of Muncie's Special Education program I can say, with confidence, that I have gained personal growth through working firsthand in the community, learned how to continue to grow my knowledge, and gained support through a growing a group of professionals who I know I can trust.”
