FUN FACT FRIDAY!
Did you know Kalmia (known to flood with little rain) was designed as a "water-carrying street", but was supposed to be improved starting in 1986. This is the year the Murrieta Creek Area Drainage Plan was approved. For Murrieta, that meant the beginning of improvements to Kalmia Street which was “categorized as a water-carrying street, built to channel water from the freeway to Murrieta Creek. But during heavy rains can cause havoc to motorists and headaches for residents along the street" (Chuck Harvey, Staff Writer, Californian Volume 80, January 26, 1990). Kenneth Edwards, Cheir County Flood Control Engineer, addressed the flooding on Kalmia stating the solution is “Line F” and once the design is completed will start purchasing the right of way then construct a channel from Interstate 215 to Murrieta Creek. Researching city records "Line F" was only partially built and and, after 40 years, continues to flux in priority and has no identified funding to compete. With forecasters continuing to predict major rainfall due to a record setting El Niño, I thought it worthy to bring up the concern. As many say, history will repeat itself, 1980 floods, 1986 floods, 1993 floods, 2016 floods, 2026...? Any 1st graders notice a pattern?!?!
