A thunderstorm only needs just ONE of these hazards below to be severe, but sometimes it's not always the case! Here's what makes a thunderstorm severe:

📏 Hail one inch or larger
💨 Winds greater or equal to 58 MPH
🌪️ Tornado

A strong low will track from northwest Kansas through north-central Iowa on Saturday, dragging a cold front through the area at night. Warm and moist air surging northward ahead of the front will push highs into the 60s and 70s. Thunderstorms may accompany the cold front as it moves into eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois. The primary threat is strong straight line winds with any storms that develop.

Temperatures reach the 60s again today before a cold front slides through tonight. Light snow showers are possible tomorrow (no accumulation expected), the we warm back up Saturday with 60s and storms. 🎢

The Storm Prediction Center has eastern Iowa and the QCA outlined for the risk of a few severe storms Saturday. Too early for details but something to keep a close eye one. ⛈

The Storm Prediction Center has issued an outlook for severe weather on Saturday from Mason City, south through Des Moines, and into south-central Iowa.

Strong to Severe Thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and through this evening with the greatest threat of severe weather over southwest sections of the area. The primary threats will be large hail and damaging winds with isolated tornadoes a secondary threat. Highs will be mostly in the upper 70s and lower 80s with lows tonight in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Thursday will result in more rounds of showers and storms with severe thunderstorms once again possible. Most locations will receive over an inch to possible 2 inches of rain by Thursday night. Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across much of central Iowa late this afternoon into this evening. The main threats will be large hail and damaging winds, although an isolated tornado or two remain possible. Localized heavy rain will also be possible into the overnight hours as the thunderstorms persists.

Active weather is expected by later Tuesday as a cold front moves into the state. Severe storms will be possible across central Iowa with the highest threat in west central into southwest Iowa. Large hail and damaging winds will be the main threat although an isolated tornado will be possible. Heavy rainfall may also occur during this time as well with some threat of flash flooding in the southwest as well. Stay tuned for the latest updates on the potential active weather expected on Tuesday.

Thunderstorms are expected across the area Friday into Friday night. There will be a chance for an isolated severe storm across portions of central Iowa, with a greater chance into southwest Iowa mainly during the afternoon and into the evening hours. Large hail and damaging winds will be the main severe threats. A tornado cannot be ruled out either.
