During this weekend’s snowstorm that blanketed parts of Michigan, Meijer brought out the Sandy Penny Horse snow plow, a ride-on, horse-shaped vehicle, to help clear parking lots and provide “more horse power” for employees keeping walkways and lanes safe for customers. The newly engineered plow sucks snow into a front auger and shoots it out through Sandy’s nose, spreading the snow to the sides and keeping the parking lot clear and safe. The unique vehicle, designed for a single rider, quickly drew attention from shoppers, many of whom stopped to watch and take photos, praising the creative approach to snow removal. Meteorologists reported up to 6 inches of snow in some areas, making traditional clearing slower, and Meijer says the Sandy Penny pilot program could expand to other stores if successful. “After the penny was phased out, Meijer introduced the Upcycle Sandy Program, transforming Sandy into motorized shopping carts, snow plows, and other ride-on vehicles to keep the iconic mascot part of daily store life,” a Meijer spokesperson said. “As part of the Upcycle Sandy Program, this snow plow provides our employees with more horsepower to tackle snow quickly and safely,” they added. “I spent over 1,000 pennies getting this parking lot cleared, and I have to say, it’s been one of the most fun days I’ve ever had,” said a Meijer employee, while shoppers like Jenna Morris described it as “amazing to watch, like a pony ride through the snow.”
