Muskogee already currently has one of the highest millage rates in Oklahoma. Where does the already high property tax revenue go?
Increasing the millage rate again and doing nothing to fix problems is a burden that taxpayers don’t need. They’ll tax our businesses and homeowners out of Muskogee, stall the housing market, and cause large employers to leave or never come.

I personally witnessed this in Kansas, each County decided to tax oil and gas production at an unheard of rate. Approximately 14% additional tax in Pratt County, Kansas… Overnight.
What happened is that all the drilling companies left, including me. Jobs fell, and the ethanol plant shuttered its doors. Then the attacks on wind and solar. They left too. Hotels are empty, downtown is a ghost town. If this sounds familiar, get readyOh, the oil tax in certain counties in Kansas wasn’t aimed just to punish large oil companies. The tax levy was so poorly written that the massive tax increase included the landowner, the farmer, the Social Security beneficiaries like my grandmother who depend on these oil checks to buy groceries.

For example, I build a new road into a farmer’s property to access a new oil well. The farmer doesn’t use it at all. Yet… the County determines that this road is an “improvement” to the farm and the property is reappraised higher. Compounding the tax problem. Farmer pays higher property tax at the new “valuation” and pays the new, higher millage rate on top of the higher valuation. Quoted by Charles Crawford
