Update on my mother’s situation:
I’m leaving tomorrow, by myself, to spend the week with my mother at the MAYO Clinic in Jacksonville, FL.
One of the biggest things I need to take care of while I’m there is getting her signed up for Medicare. In order to do that, she either needs to be present, or we need to have Power of Attorney paperwork completed. I thought she had already taken care of that — unfortunately, I was wrong. My goal is to get both of those things handled while I’m there.
I’m going to miss my family this week, but making this trip will hopefully give us a much better understanding of exactly what’s going on with her health. It will also allow me to have more control over managing her care from a distance.
Once Medicare finally kicks in, if we are still facing this situation, it may allow us to move her closer to home, back to South Carolina, where she can be near family.
We are also continuing to have a very difficult time getting her short-term disability paperwork completed. She has now gone about a month without being paid, while I am still paying her insurance premium out of pocket every two weeks.
Her primary care provider, who is a nurse practitioner, said she could not complete the paperwork because she doesn’t know enough about my mother’s condition and told us to send it to her gastroenterologist. However, the gastroenterologist — whom my mother had only seen once, on 05/11/26 — told us it needed to be completed by her primary care provider. We’ve been going back and forth between both offices with no resolution.
The Mayo Clinic told us they would have no problem filling out the paperwork once my mother is officially approved for a transplant, but not before then.
She had until 06/01/26 to submit the paperwork to qualify for short-term disability, so I called the company (Sedgwick) yesterday to request an extension. They told us an examiner would review her case and get back to us.
Everything is still very uncertain, emotionally exhausting, and getting increasingly expensive. To everyone who has donated, shared, prayed, or reached out — thank you. Your support is helping us continue fighting to save our mother and bring her home.
I’ll update everyone again as soon as I know more.
