Update on My Mom — August 19, 2026

After spending a week in rehab at Grand Strand Medical Center, (a total of 50 days at that hospital) my mom had made enough progress that she was ready to be discharged. On Tuesday, August 11, she was finally able to come home.

When she first came home, she still needed quite a bit of help getting around. Her bedroom is upstairs, and at first she couldn’t even make it up the stairs on her own. I had to help her, and we had to stop and take breaks along the way. She also still needed to use a walker to get around.

But in just the short time she’s been home, she has already made a lot of progress. She can now go up and down the stairs by herself multiple times a day, and she barely uses her walker anymore. Sometimes she’ll carry it with her just to be safe, but most of the time she’s getting around without needing it.

She is continuing dialysis three days a week — Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays — so we have to work her other medical appointments around that schedule.

We were able to get her scheduled for a post-op appointment this Monday at 10:30 a.m. At that appointment, they’ll also be looking at the tube that is still in her stomach from her surgery and figuring out the next steps for getting it removed. We were told that the tube needs to be removed gradually rather than all at once, so hopefully we’ll know more after Monday’s appointment.

The biggest news, though, is that she is home again and continuing to get stronger. After everything she has been through over the last several months — the hospitals, ICU stays, surgeries, strokes, dialysis, and finally rehab — seeing her walking around the house and getting up and down the stairs on her own is a pretty incredible change from where she was not that long ago.

There is still a lot ahead of her, but we’re continuing to take things one day at a time. Thank you again to everyone who has continued to check on her, pray for her, donate, share the GoFundMe, and support our family through all of this. It truly means more than we can say.

Update on My Mom – 08/06/2026

Yesterday, my mom was officially accepted into the rehabilitation unit at Grand Strand Medical Center. She was moved there last night and officially started rehab today.

I had the chance to speak with one of her physical therapists today, and he told me, because of the strokes she suffered while in the hospital, one of the things they’ve been watching closely is whether she would have any paralysis, loss of coordination, or changes in sensation. Thankfully, so far they aren’t seeing any of those problems. He said that’s always something they monitor after a stroke, but at this point it doesn’t appear to be affecting her.

He told me that most of what he’s seeing is exactly what you would expect from someone who has spent months in a hospital bed. Right now, the biggest challenge is simply rebuilding her strength, endurance, and muscle.

The good news is she’s doing well. She has a healthy appetite, she’s motivated, and she’s finally at the stage where the focus is on getting stronger instead of just surviving.

We’re not sure yet how long she’ll be in rehab, but we’re hopeful this is the final major step before she can finally leave the hospital and come home.

She still has one drainage tube remaining from her emergency surgery that will need to be removed, but aside from continuing rehab and getting stronger, that’s really the last major obstacle we’re waiting on.

Update on My Mom – July 28, 2026

First, I want to apologize for taking so long to post an update. This whole journey has been an emotional roller coaster, and honestly, it’s been mentally and emotionally exhausting. Between work, family, spending as much time with my mom as possible, and trying to keep up with everything else, I just haven’t had the energy to sit down and write.

In my last update on July 10, I shared that my mom had been moved back to the ICU after doctors discovered a small brain hemorrhage and blood clots in her lungs. Thankfully, the hemorrhage was small enough that surgery wasn’t necessary, but it was still another major setback in what has already been an incredibly difficult few months.

While she was in the ICU, we were also told that she had experienced a couple of small “mini” strokes (microstrokes). Thankfully, the medical team was able to monitor and manage them, but it was yet another hurdle in what has been a long and difficult recovery. It seemed like every time we took one step forward, something else would happen—but she just kept fighting.

Shortly after returning to the ICU, she was placed back on a feeding tube while the doctors closely monitored her condition. After a few days, she improved enough to have the feeding tube removed and was allowed to begin eating soft foods again.

Then, on July 20, another obstacle came up. Because of her dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), the doctors became concerned that food and liquids could be entering her lungs. They discussed putting her back on a feeding tube, and the speech therapist immediately began working with her on swallowing exercises for her throat and tongue.

She worked incredibly hard on those exercises every day, and after passing her swallowing evaluations, she was able to continue eating soft foods instead of going back on the feeding tube.

Around July 22, she improved enough to be moved out of the ICU and into the Critical Care Unit. That same day also marked one full month since she had been admitted to Grand Strand Medical Center. It’s hard to believe she’s been there that long.

Then came some of the best news we’ve had in a long time.

On Friday, July 24, she passed another swallowing evaluation and was officially cleared to eat a regular diet again. After everything she’s been through, something as simple as being able to enjoy a normal meal again felt like a huge victory.

The very next day, July 25, she was moved from the Critical Care Unit into a regular hospital room.

Today, she’s doing much better than she was just a couple of weeks ago. She’s eating regular food again and continuing to regain her strength. The doctors are now looking into transferring her to a local rehabilitation facility, hopefully by next week, where she’ll continue physical therapy and work toward getting back home.

We know there is still a long road ahead, but for the first time in a while, it truly feels like we’re moving in the right direction.

Update on My Mom 07/10/2026

First, I want to thank everyone once again for all of the prayers, donations, messages, and support. Our family has been overwhelmed by the kindness you’ve shown during all of this, and we truly appreciate every one of you.

A few days ago, I went to Grand Strand Hospital to have lunch with my mom during my lunch break. I brought her a meatball sub, and she actually ate about half of it. She had recently gotten the staples removed from her abdomen and was in good spirits. She was telling me how she’d been getting up and moving around, and it really felt like she was making progress.

After I left, the doctors removed two of the three drainage tubes from her abdomen, leaving her with just one. That felt like another encouraging sign that she was continuing to heal.

Unfortunately, shortly afterward, things took another unexpected turn.

My mom started experiencing some new medical issues, and the doctors found a small hemorrhage (bleeding) in her brain. Thankfully, after speaking with her nurse, I was told the hemorrhage is very small, and at this point they are not recommending surgery. They’re simply going to monitor it closely.

They also discovered blood clots in her lungs. Thankfully, I was told those are also very small, and the current plan is to treat them with medication.

Unfortunately, she’s also been unable to keep any food down. Because of that, the doctors had to place a feeding tube back through her nose so she can continue getting the nutrition she needs while they figure out what’s causing the nausea and vomiting.

Because of these complications, she has been moved back to the ICU, where the doctors and nurses can keep a much closer eye on her. It’s heartbreaking after seeing so much progress just a short time ago, but we’re hoping this is only a temporary setback and that she’ll once again start moving in the right direction.

While I was at the hospital, I also brought up additional paperwork from Sedgwick, the company handling her short-term disability claim. The paperwork they previously had only covered her through July 1, so there are more forms that need to be completed to continue her benefits. I left everything with the nursing staff so it could be passed along to the appropriate doctors, and I’m hoping that process moves along quickly.

This entire journey has been an emotional roller coaster. Every time it seems like we’re turning a corner, another obstacle appears. But my mom has already overcome so much, and we’re continuing to take it one day at a time.

Update on My Mom – 07/02/2026

Since my last update on Thursday (06/25/2026), my Mother has made more progress.

She is still at Grand Strand Hospital, but she has been moved again — from the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor. ICU is on the 3rd floor, and even though she was moved out of ICU after only two days, the rest of that floor is still for critical patients (at least that’s what she tells me!). So this move is another positive sign that she’s heading in the right direction.

She’s also had both tubes removed from her nose, and after a couple days on a liquid-only diet, followed by a couple days of soft foods, she was officially cleared today to eat regular food again!

She still has 4 or 5 tubes coming out of her abdomen, but she tells me one of them should be removed soon. It was supposed to happen yesterday, but it didn’t, so hopefully today.

She also still has a lot of physical therapy ahead of her, but once the tubes are all removed, it shouldn’t be as difficult as it was when she first came home from Florida. Since her emergency surgery last Monday (06/22/2026), the swelling in her legs has gone down significantly. So while she’s been doing light physical therapy (like getting out of bed and sitting in a chair), she should be able to advance much more quickly once some of these tubes are removed.

In some other good news, after more than two months of trying to get everything sorted out, I was finally able to get Sedgwick to approve her short-term disability as of yesterday! That whole ordeal was more stressful than almost anything else.

Luckily, after she came home from Florida, I was able to get my hands on all of her medical paperwork, including “After Visit Summaries” from multiple hospitals over the last couple of months. I scanned and organized everything into separate PDFs, then paid for an online fax service and sent around 100 pages of medical documentation to Sedgwick on 06/18/2026.

And finally… it was approved.

I still don’t know all the specifics — like what percentage of pay she’ll receive, when it starts, or when it ends — but just getting it approved was a huge weight lifted off my chest.

Thank you to everybody for any and all support over the last couple of months. Hopefully this battle will be coming to an end soon, with my mom as the victor.

Also, a special thank you to my Aunt Diane (aka Auntie Dina) for coming and spending a couple nights at the hospital with my mom again. It definitely helps her morale.

Update on My Mom – 06/25/2026

If you saw my last update, you know that after being home for only a week, we had to call 911 for her Monday morning (06/22/2026). She was rushed to South Strand Hospital and then transferred to Grand Strand Hospital for emergency surgery. We found out she had a perforated intestine and sepsis.

At the time of my last update, I didn’t realize they had only given her a 25% chance of surviving the surgery. Thankfully, she had already passed all of the rigorous stress tests at the MAYO Clinic in Florida for a potential liver transplant, which gave her some peace of mind going into it.

She made it through the surgery.

From what was explained to me, it was somewhat similar to a gastric bypass procedure, in the sense that they had to reroute part of her intestines, though it wasn’t exactly the same thing.

The doctors told us she would likely remain in ICU for several weeks. I visited her Monday night after surgery and again Tuesday night. Amazingly, after just two days, she was moved out of ICU on Wednesday and into a regular hospital room.

Besides having several tubes in her abdomen, two through her nose, and being stitched and stapled up, she looks and sounds surprisingly well. Honestly, it feels like her cognitive ability is better than it has been in the last six weeks. She seems more like herself again.

Even more surprising, her legs — which had been severely swollen this entire time — were back to normal size the day after surgery.

Could this have been the problem all along? We have no idea. It’s hard not to wonder.

It’s wild to think she was sent all the way to Florida and nearly had a liver transplant — something we had been mentally preparing for this whole time — and now, as of yesterday, her bilirubin is down to 1.74 (from around 46.5 when she was first hospitalized). Normal is around 1.2, so she’s getting very close.

Hopefully this is finally the turning point.

Now she has to heal, regain her strength, and take things one day at a time. We still don’t know how long she’ll be hospitalized, but at least now she’s local, and friends and family can visit whenever they want.

On top of everything, I faxed Sedgwick around 100 pages of medical paperwork last week, since she still hasn’t received a paycheck since mid-April. I’ll be calling them today to check where things stand.

Update on My Mom – 06/23/2026

We were so happy to celebrate my mother’s 65th birthday on Friday (06/19/2026) with her at home. Unfortunately, over the weekend, things took a turn for the worse.

Yesterday morning (06/22/2026), around 6:00 AM, I had to call 911 and she was rushed to the hospital. We found out—without any warning—that she had a perforated intestine and needed emergency surgery immediately.

She is now hospitalized again, this time at Grand Strand Hospital here in Myrtle Beach, and is currently recovering in the ICU.

Like I mentioned in my last update, the transition home had been rough, and over the weekend it became even more difficult. I’ll spare everyone the details, but it was clear something wasn’t right. As the weekend went on, she kept getting worse, and my brother and sister were both coming by to help as much as they could.

Yesterday morning around 5:45 AM, my brother came back over because my mom wanted him to take her to the hospital. Since I had to work and he was off—and only lives five minutes away—it made sense. But once she got downstairs, she told us to call 911 instead.

They first rushed her to South Strand Medical Center, where they discovered the perforated intestine. From there, she was transferred to Grand Strand Medical Center for emergency surgery.

The surgery is over, and now she’s in recovery.

She’s coherent, alert, and determined to get better. If you know my mom personally, you know she’s one tough lady. But it’s going to be a long road ahead. She’s stitched and stapled up, with tubes in her nose and stomach, but she’s comfortable, and most importantly, she’s in the right place—close to home, where we can all be there for her.

Update on My Mom – 06/19/2026

Today is my mother’s 65th birthday… and we did it. She is officially home!

On Sunday night (06/14/2026), my brother and mother pulled up to our house around 10 PM after a long drive back from Jacksonville, FL.

My mother hadn’t been home in 35 days, spending that time in multiple out-of-town hospitals: MUSC in Charleston, SC, as well as the MAYO Clinic and Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. My brother had been with her for the past 9 days, following the 6 days I spent in Florida.

I hadn’t posted an update yet because it has been a rough transition.

Knowing she was coming home, I spent the weekend preparing her room and picking up all of her prescriptions.

I ordered her a new box spring and a comfortable mattress and put them together for her. My sister got her new bedding, and we made everything up nice for her. Unfortunately, the bed ended up being way too high for her (despite it actually being an inch shorter than before she was hospitalized). I was able to take it apart and adjust the frame, lowering it about 3 more inches, and that seems to have helped.

Today, the home nurse is stopping by for the first time since she’s been home. She has already gone to dialysis locally, and my brother — who still hasn’t gone back to work yet — has been handling most of it. Tomorrow will be my first time taking her.

I was also able to scan and upload all of the medical paperwork and records she came home with, organize them into chronological PDFs, and fax over 100 pages to Sedgwick (the company handling her work disability claim) yesterday. So now we wait and see how that goes.

Again, thank you to everyone. I truly don’t know how we could have gotten through this without all of your help. A month ago, we weren’t even sure if she would ever make it back home. While we still have a lot of work ahead of us, at least she’s here.

Like I’ve said, it’s been a rough transition, so I don’t have any pictures yet — but hopefully I can post some later, especially since it’s her birthday and family will be coming over tonight.

Update on My Mom – 06/14/2026

As my mother marked her 35th day in the hospital today, we finally have some good news…

She is officially coming home this week!

Her bilirubin levels continue to trend down — 5.2 as of Friday (down from 6.4 on Monday, 6.7 the week before, and all the way up around 48.5 when she was first hospitalized). Normal is around 1.2, so we’re getting very close.

The rehabilitation hospital she’s currently in, in Jacksonville, FL, first had to confirm that she could seamlessly continue dialysis somewhere in our area, since she has been going 3 times a week. My brother was able to get that arranged, so now she is officially cleared to leave after completing a few more physical therapy exercises to help her safely get in and out of a car.

We were really hoping she could make it home this week, especially because her 65th birthday is this Friday, June 19th, and all she wanted for her birthday was to come home. It looks like that wish is going to come true.

Once they leave, the normally 7-hour drive will take a little longer, since they’ll have to stop every hour or so for her to stretch her legs.

I’ll update again once she gets home, or if anything changes.
