Allan here with a story for you peeps. I started playing GW games back in Rogue Trader and 2nd edition by playing a lot of Space Hulk. I knew about 40k, but I did not dabble in it yet. I ended up moving to Utah for a few years, and I was out of gaming during that time. I had a co-worker that brought a codex to work with him one day, and we started talking about Warhammer, and I decided I would start an army. I did not finish it in time before I moved back to Los Angeles, so I needed to find someone to play with.
So, I am back in LA, and all my old gaming contacts have moved on, or moved away. It is about 20 years ago and just after the release of the infamous 3.5 chaos codex. So, I hit the interwebs to see what the 40k scene was like. I found a Yahoo Group for So Cal 40k players (hey, it was 20 years ago, don't judge!).
I learned of a 40k RTT up in Hobbytown USA in Santa Clarita CA, and played in my first RTT. I went 2-1 and had a good time. I met a lot of good guys there, that I would see around at a lot of other RTTs, and playing the game.
20 years later from my first RTT, here I am reunited with 4 other people that were also at the So Cal Open. The funny thing is that Adam Solis was still playing his Black Legion, Ken Krogman was still playing his Black Templar, Justin Curtis was still playing his Blood Angels, and I was still playing my Thousand Sons. 20 years and the only army change was Steve Masuda (who was responsible for my one loss 20 years ago) switched from World Eaters/Khorne demons to Death I Guard.
It was good to see these guys again, and some people come and go, but it is interesting the friends you make along the way.
