As Robert Mondavi was fond of reminding us, "Find your passion and you'll never work a day in your life." Well, for the past 20 years we have been following our passion: to create big, important books, books that matter, books that inspire. And now here comes a beauty: Steven Kent Mirassou's "Lineage, Life, Love and Six Generations in California Wine." This is not some self-promoting PR exercise; this is an illuminating meditation on the 8,000-year pursuit of making wines that bring people together and lift up our spirit. Steven takes us deep inside his passion and wisdom and the result will stand as a unique contribution to the literature of American wine. Steven, we bow in gratitude!

The official pub date is Sept. 7th, but you can pre-order the book now at Amazon or, better, at your local bookstore. Cheers!

Dear Friends...

As we Americans are all preoccupied with our coming elections -- and understandably so -- let's pause for a moment in support of our friends in France, which is once more plunged into crisis and trauma due to senseless, barbaric violence. Shee-it... Stay strong, mes amis!!!

Dear Friends...

As writers go, I'm an old-fashioned journalist and text guy.

But over the years I have had the joy of working with and learning from some extraordinary visual artists. Milton Glaser. Connie Hwang. Dorothy Carico Smith. They can take my mundane words on the page and bathe them in color and light and give them a thoroughly distinctive feel. Lucky me!

Milton's fertile imagination, in posters such as this one, and in his I Love NY logo, and his iconic poster of Bob Dylan, made him the dean of American designers. Milton passed away last month, at the age of 91. It was a tremendous loss for American design and for our little publishing house, Val de Grace Books. For a taste of the man and what made him so special, please have a look right here:

Bless you, Milton. Your spirit lives on!!!
