High Heels for Going to Heaven at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) demonstrates the pop art and utopian styles that Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama: Kusama Infinity is famous for around the world. Many of her creative trademarks—grand scale, minimalism, repeating shapes and the color red—are immediately apparent in the painted plastic sculpture displayed post-security in Harvey Milk Terminal 1.

Years of increasing traffic have made Falcon Field Airport (FFZ) in Mesa, AZ, one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States, with 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟰𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬.

To alleviate associated growing pains, the airport added a new taxiway, relocated two existing taxiways and reconstructed a large aircraft parking ramp—all during 2024. In total, the city-owned airport has recently made more than $𝟱 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 in airside improvements, largely funded with federal and state grants.

As one of six airports vying for passengers in the ultra-competitive Southern California marketplace, Ontario International Airport (ONT) has long realized the need to differentiate itself.

It’s no wonder ONT is constantly looking for ways to zig while neighboring airports zag…and also why it plays video of tranquil underwater scenes on repeat in one of its terminals.

✈️ Northern Colorado Regional Airport - FNL has long planned to build a larger, more modern terminal to supplement its current private and charter traffic with scheduled commercial air service.
💰Originally scheduled to begin in the next few years, the project was fast-tracked to meet the July 2024 funding deadline associated with $𝟭𝟲.𝟴 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 in federal CARES Act funding awarded to FNL in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
🛫Completed last fall, the 𝟭𝟵,𝟰𝟬𝟬-𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗲-𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 is located about 75 yards directly north of the previous terminal, with direct access to the flightline and main ramp. It can accommodate larger aircraft and was designed to position FNL as a regional transportation hub ready for future growth.

✈️ For more than a decade, Denver International Airport (DEN) has been developing its Safety Management System (SMS) Manual to comply with the Federal Aviation Administration Safety Organization’s ruling for Part 139 Operators. In doing so, airport leadership has made a concerted effort to integrate safety throughout the facility, across all operations.

✅ The comprehensive, long-term effort was validated in April, when DEN learned that FAA had accepted its SMS Manual.

🛫 All major runway projects are challenging undertakings. That’s a given. Some, however, are in a league of their own.

💰 The recent $𝟭𝟭𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 of Runway 1-19 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is a great example. As the primary runway at the airport closest to the U.S. capital, 1-19 happens to be the busiest in the nation, averaging 820 arrivals and departures a day. Compounding the complexity, it’s 7,169 feet long and more than 80 years old.

⚡️ In its ideal state, electricity travels at the speed of light. But actually, moving high voltage power from one point to another is rarely a quick or simple process—especially at a bustling airport.

✈ Portland International Airport (PDX) understands that challenge firsthand. Demand for electrical connectivity is skyrocketing at the Oregon gateway as rental car companies add more electric vehicles to their inventories. And while the airport’s consolidated rental car center is relatively new, it previously lacked the means to quickly recharge electric vehicles after customers returned them.

💰 That all changed in December when PDX unveiled one of the nation’s first common-use, direct current fast charger system inside an airport rental car quick turnaround area. The $𝟯.𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 charges electric vehicles in just a couple hours—up to eight times faster than a common Level 2 charger.

✈ The aviation industry has long relied on Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data to provide real-time tracking and monitoring of aircraft for collision avoidance, weather awareness and routine air traffic management. However, the technology can also be used to assess and bill aircraft owners for landing and other airfield fees, which has caused an outcry of objections from some general aviation operators unaccustomed to receiving invoices for using public airports.

🧑‍⚖️ The resulting uproar has prompted pilot advocacy groups to lobby for regulatory changes. Montana is leading that movement as the first U.S. state to pass a law that limits the use of ADS-B data to assess user fees on certain aircraft.

✈️ This March, Quad Cities International Airport - MLI in Moline, IL, unveiled new ticket counters and a completely revamped system for handling and screening checked baggage. The changes not only improve operational efficiency and enhance the passenger experience, they are also a harbinger of things to come. The airport plans to remake its entire terminal in coming years.

💰 In January 2020, they mapped out a $𝟲𝟬 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 called Project GATEWAY, which stands for Growing the Air Travel Experience the MLI Way. Its overriding goal is to provide a world-class travel experience for passengers, and the recent ticket counter and outgoing baggage project was the first of four planned phases.
