Hello, I am Marilyn Dale! 👋Thank you for taking a moment to get to know me. Somewhere along the line I read, “whatever you loved to do in kindergarten is what yo

u’ll love to do all your life.” For me, it’s true, and I am both so lucky and blessed. I loved drawing and coloring. My favorite toys were my crayons.Today, as a fine artist, I am an award winning artist, a colorist, accomplished in oil, watercolor and pastel. I am inspired by landscapes and people, creating everything from traditional portraiture through abstractions. I’ve earned a Certificate in Painting from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and taken additional coursework there for more than twenty years. A working artist, graphic designer and art instructor, I’ve taught art to adults in the continuing education department of a small college and my local art league. I enjoy painting in oil, watercolor and pastel, from traditional portraiture through abstraction. In addition to artwork to hang in your home or office, I have designed large-scale liturgical fabric and stained glass works and had several works published. I enjoy working on commissions, where the pieces have personal significance to the owner. As the chair of the Art and Environment Ministry for my church for many years, I've designed large-scale liturgical fabric and stained glass works. Several of my pieces have been featured in publications by the North American Conference of Separated and Divorced Catholics, the Lutheran Church, University Hill Congregation and frequently by the Ministry and Liturgy Magazine. I am also the author of Energize Your Art Ministry.

"I don't care to talk about my experiences so I hope you understand."

Even when letters arrived torn or incomplete, they held meaning. Broken words still carried whole hope. Across oceans and battle lines, letters were fragile: bent, delayed, sometimes arriving in fragments. Yet each scrap was enough. Words might have shattered but hope endured—restoring connection between those apart.

Late September has that quiet shift. We're heading towards cooler mornings, a craving for change, and maybe a little inspiration to refresh your space.

If you're feeling that seasonal reset, now’s a great time to explore some new artwork.

Today's artwork is called "Truly Distant and Strange Lands" — thanks for stopping by!

"I can't wait to walk on paved roads again and see people who look like me."

Torn from fragments of my father’s letters, these headings each marked distant islands across the Pacific. To his family, these tropical island names carried both dread and relief: reminders of how far away he was. Every change deepened their longing for him to return. Only countries, not addresses, nor even cities were revealed - unimaginable to those at home. These became the markers of absence and the proof of survival.

Want to start your week with a moment of zen?

Take a stroll through my online gallery. It's the perfect place for a little reflection.

You might be surprised by what you find.

You're viewing "The End of the Beginning", part of my WW2 series featured at North Central College coming up in November.

They waded waist deep through surf into the unknown. Training had not prepared them for the drag of the sea, the weight of gear, or the jungle’s threat and oppressive heat beyond the sand. Packs heavy, skies deceptively bright, every step pressed them closer to danger in this place, which by all other accounts was a tropical paradise.

It was a decisive moment, when the long and difficult beginning gave way to something new. With faith—fragile but real—they clutched the hope that victory might one day soon follow. In Churchill’s words, this was “not the end, nor even the beginning of the end, but perhaps the end of the beginning.”

It’s Positive Thinking Day, so I’m setting some good intentions for both of us. 🤗

Art has a lot to do with how we think and feel. Whether it’s a moment for moodiness or something that brings levity and impact to a space, it’s good to feel it all.

But a day dedicated to optimism? That’s not a bad idea.

Share a positive thought with me as you pass by, and take a peek at "Relax" while you’re here.

These trees are at the imaginary opening of a forest. I find trees fascinating, they are strong, tall and linear. And perhaps I am influenced by living with a small woods as my backyard for some 40 years.
