The Illinois Youth Press Corps has arrived at United Center! Ready for the reporting assignment of a lifetime. And a little James Taylor, though none of these kids knew who he is. Ugh.

Okay, friends…I’m about to do some shameless networking here. This week, I’ll be serving as the coordinator of the Illinois Youth Press Corps and assisting over 40 high school students from 10 Illinois high schools as fully-credentialed journalists at the Democratic National Convention. This will be a life-changing experience for these determined and talented young journalists, but you can also imagine that it’s a stressful endeavor as well. So I could use your help!

If you happen to know anyone who is attending the DNC at any point who you think might be a contact that one of our student journalists could pursue for interviews and story ideas, you can reach out to me here or send me contact information at [email protected]. Considering the fact that there will be thousands of journalists there competing for interviews and so many attendees, any connections you could provide for us would be greatly appreciated!

Central Times will be at the DNC every day! Follow our work at centraltimes.org and on X and Instagram . And I’ll be posting on X when I can . Check us out!

Probably far more Central Times alumni operated without censorship than those of you who did, but many of you can likely relate to what happened to this year's staff:

ILLINOIS — A school district censored an article published in a high school newspaper, then locked away the print issues for nearly 24 hours, which students say violated their rights as journalists…

CT alumni - we need your help! There is a lot of misinformation out there causing current students to avoid signing up for newspaper. For example, counselors are telling kids that newspaper "might not count" toward English credits accepted by colleges.

We believe that being on Central Times helped to get you INTO good colleges more than it kept you out of them. So here's how you can help. Please just participate in a roll call here on this post. Tell us what college or university you attended or are attending. And, if you have any memory of how or whether your newspaper credits were counted (or not) during your admission process, let us know.

We're working on a database to share with students so they have concrete and specific information. We want to stop those who scare them with "maybes."

Thanks for your help! ROLL CALL!

Naperville Central is hosting an IHSA Journalism Sectional THIS SATURDAY, April 21, and we've had some judges cancel on us. Many of you have competed in the past or have gone on to journalism and publishing-related careers (or are at least studying for them in college). If you're in town and can spare about 4 hours, we could use your help! It IS paid. If you're a CT alum working in any field related to journalism, publishing, public relations, education, etc., and you might be interested, please email CT adviser Keith Carlson for more information at [email protected].

MONUMENTAL NEWS: Today, Gov. Rauner signed into law a student press freedom bill that will essentially roll Illinois back to the Tinker standard. Details are still forthcoming, but here is the language of the law if you're interested: http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/fulltext.asp?Name=099-0678

HB5902 became law in Illinois today! Governor Rauner’s signature means that student journalists now have the right to report responsibly about issues that matter to them without fear of arbitrary censorship. Thank you to Will Guzzardi and Daniel Biss for helping bring Illinois back to the Tinker st...
