Walmart is making moves, and the future of commerce just got more conversational.
Walmart has teamed up with OpenAI to let customers shop directly through ChatGPT using “Instant Checkout.”
This is proof that AI is rewriting the rules of e-commerce.
Here’s what this move signals, and how you should be thinking about it:
🔍 What it means for your brand:
1. Search becomes a conversation, not a query.
Users might ask, “What running shoes are best under $100?” and check out instantly, all inside ChatGPT.
2. Referral traffic from AI is rising fast. ChatGPT already drives ~20% of Walmart’s referral traffic, showing how people are using AI as a discovery tool.
3. New monetization & visibility models. If AI becomes the front door for shopping, brands will need to optimize not just for Google SEO but for “AI discovery” ~ how bots choose and suggest products.
📍 What you can do now (if you run e-commerce, or market products)
👉🏻 Start thinking about “agentic commerce” how can your products be surfaced by AI systems, not just found via search engines?
👉🏻 Optimize your product data & feed, clean metadata, good imagery, clear descriptions will matter more than ever when bots decide what to show.
👉🏻 Experiment with AI touchpoints: chatbots, recommendation engines, content that’s bot-friendly.
👉🏻 Watch partnerships: as OpenAI does deals with big retail players, smaller brands must find smart ways to plug into AI ecosystems (via integrations, platforms, or partnerships).
At DigitalShortcutz.agency, we help forward-thinking brands stay ahead of this shift. If you’re ready to reimagine how customers discover and buy from you, not just search for you, let’s talk.
