I put bobbin thread in the needle. On purpose.
Not because I was sewing at midnight.
Not because I forgot how the machine works.
This is actually a sewing trick, especially for sheer fabric like chiffon and organza, when you don’t want backstitching or knots showing through the dart.
Have you ever heard of sewing with only the bobbin thread?

You can spend hours sewing… and then damage the fabric in a few seconds with an iron.

This happened to me with this red rayon. The moment I pressed it, a dark mark appeared. Luckily, the color came back after a few minutes — but for a moment, I thought I had ruined it.

There are quite a few pressing mistakes that can leave permanent marks, shine, puckering, or even melted fabric.

I have 15 common ironing mistakes in the first comment.
Have you ever damaged fabric with an iron?

“I KNOW this… so why do I keep forgetting to do it?”
That thought has crossed my mind more than once at the sewing machine.

That’s what these are. Not fancy tricks — just practical little things that can save you from crooked seams, thread nests, broken needles, bulky corners, and a lot of unpicking.

I have 19 of them in the first comment.

What’s one sewing habit you know is important… but still sometimes forget?

Some things about fabric nobody tells you until something goes wrong — and you ruin a perfectly good piece of fabric.

I wish I had known some of these things much earlier — like not trusting the cut edge from the fabric store, checking the right side even on solids, or testing what steam can do before cutting.

I have 10 fabric lessons in the first comment.

What’s one thing about fabric you learned the hard way?

They are called Bobbin Genies.
Which sounds like they should grant three sewing wishes.
My first wish: no thread nests. Second wish: no bobbin problems. Third wish: placing the bobbin correctly the first time.
Have you ever used them? If you’re curious, I included Bobbin Genies in my post about unusual sewing tools, and there’s a YouTube video too.

Sewing is fun. We all love sewing.
But let’s not pretend every part of it is fun.
For me, there are always a few things I’d happily skip if that were an option.
Cutting? Threading? Unpicking? Adjusting patterns? Cleaning up the mess after?

What do you hate most about sewing?

“Should I try this unusual needle?” I thought while browsing a Joann store during its closing sale.
It had two eyes but only one point, and of course I had to see what would happen if I threaded both.
The result? Two colors at once — and some very interesting decorative stitches.
Would you have picked up this needle too?
See what happened when I sewed with two threads in one needle — first comment.

Is a pile of fabric scraps clutter?
I prefer to think of it as a whole collection of future projects. 😄
Some of my scraps have turned into bookmarks, pumpkins, bags, decorations, even a dog bandana.
So yes, I keep them. Probably more than I should.
Do you save fabric scraps — or are you ruthless about throwing them away?
