Local fishing communities located near Santarém, Brazil have taken initiative and created management programs in partnership with a NGO called Sapopema and researchers. This has allowed them to conserve their arapaima populations allowing for controlled harvest and sustainable economic development for these communities. In neighboring communities with no managements lack the abundance of arapaima. I enjoyed my time living and working with these communities!
