Meg's Music Publishing Tips

Meg's Music Publishing Tips Hi! This page is to educate and provide tips and tricks for general music publishing. I am a senior at MTSU majoring in Music Business.

I have created this page to share tips about music publishing and getting started in this facet of the music industry. Music publishing has been what I am most passionate about in school and I am hopeful this page will make you passionate about it too! This page focuses on musical copyright and the exploitation of those rights. I want to help songwriters and musicians learn their music rights and

how to build their careers off of their own creativity. The main sources of income for many songwriters come from mechanical rights, performance rights, synchronization rights, and royalties. Music publishers help songwriters build their careers in many ways and it is a very important aspect of business that cannot be overlooked.

Let's talk about song splits!

In other terms, the way the song gets paid out. This graphic is essentially what the publisher's side looks like, but there is another split for the record label side if they own some of the song.

In the most basic of splits, we have two songwriters (Kelly and Molly) and they each have two publishers. Kelly and Molly would split their side 50/50 and each of their publishers would get 25% of THEIR share.

It helps to keep the songwriter side and publisher side separate.

This is a very basic split and you'd be surprised how much or how little some of your favorite artists or songwriters have of this pie.

If this pie were a pop song, you might have 30 slices of songwriters and publishers. 💸

How much money is your music making from streaming?

Let's take a look!

For every stream, you get the mechanical royalty rate of 9.1 cents. For songs over 5 minutes, you get 9.1 cents plus 1.75 cents for every minute over.

That amount is then divided per stream amongst everyone who has ownership of the song. I.E. record labels, publishers, songwriters, artists, producers.

Streaming is so popular and it is the majority of the way people are getting their music. The less ways you have to split that royalty amount, the more money goes in your pocket!

One thing you must be familiar with when working in music publishing is copyright and copyright law. Copyright is for intellectual property like songs and master recordings while Trademark protects a different aspect of branding.

Copyright protection begins the minute that song, book, or film is fixed in a tangible form of expression. For example, a recording or a hand-written lyric sheet.

It is important to know copyright law as a musician to know your own rights and the ways you can use or license them!

Ready to make a deal with a music publisher? 🎬

There are a few things you should do first!

- Make sure your music is ready. Put it on a playlist with similar tracks and see how it compares. Think about the different uses your songs could get.

- Educate yourself on publishing and how it works. Know what you will be looking for in a deal.

- Research your local publishers. See what kinds of artists they are working with and if the work they are doing aligns with your songs and your brand.

Then when you're ready, get yourself a good lawyer and start working on building relationships with the publisher(s) you are potentially interested in.

The music business is smaller than you think and can be a tight-knit community. Putting yourself out there and making good connections may help you more than you think! 🎼
