Not every US Citizen gets to vote.
An estimated 262 million US Americans are of voting age. In the last election, 173.85 registered to vote. Of that population, about 156 million people actually voted.

Why? Disengaged? Disenchanted? Certainly, yes. And also disenfranchised! Like in Alabama, where officials insist upon a government-issued ID in order to vote. However, just after requiring this, the state decided it was “fiscally irresponsible” to keep motor vehicle departments open in certain parts of the state. This left these areas—dubbed the Black Belt region of Alabama for both the tint of the soil and the race of the majority of the population—with so few locations to get a license, one may have to travel 50 miles.

This and other deliberate and worsening realities are included in historian and educator Carol Anderson’s book One Person, No Vote.
