“A group of Democratic members of Congress this week introduced new federal legislation aimed at combating the surge of book banning in schools. Introduced on December 5 by Florida’s Maxwell Alejandro Frost and Frederica Wilson, and Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, the Fight Book Bans Act would offer school districts funding to defend against the ongoing surge in challenges to books and educational materials that has led to thousands of titles being pulled from school library bookshelves.”

Artist ’s SWEETHEART PARTY is a super, limited edition collection of photographs. Looking for something special for the holidays. This is it.

“Third Man gifted Marlos a Third Man Photo Studio x Retrospekt Polaroid camera to which the artist would take on many travels for the past 2 years documenting life, death, birth, people and places. Somewhere along the journey, Marlos decided 2 bring this collection of experiences back to the people in the form of their new book, SWEETHEART PARTY! This collection of Polaroids includes intimate moments in the artist's life that serve as a way to get closer to Marlos even if you’ve never met them. Highly magnetic, SWEETHEART PARTY is just that, a party; one where all kinds of emotions are in the room at the same time. SWEETHEART PARTY puts you in different worlds without leaving your couch; you dont have 2 have FOMO because we literally put you in the experience." Find out more at thirdmanbooks.com!

Repost from - As book bans continue to rise & allow some people in this nation to further marginalize certain voices, I’m on a mission to read more banned books. Want to read with & me? We’re kicking off a new book happy hour this month. We’re grateful the kind crew at are letting us meet on their patio. During this first time together, we’ll meet and enjoy one another, imbibe at the Blue Room bar (alcohol-free options, too), read some excerpts from potential selections, and decide which books we plan to read together over the next year.

Please join us and help us shape this new book gathering.

ps—The Blue Room is open at 7:30 pm for music trivia night with , so you can make an entire night of it if you’d like.

Did you know that books like Forrest Gump and Dune have been banned by school systems in the USA? Join us Nov 16 patio to discuss and READ banned books.

Repost from - In Collier County, FL more than 300 book titles are now banned. Titles include literary classics, books adapted into films and TV shows, & young adult books.

A list of books from October 2023 identified hundreds of titles for removal from classroom and school libraries. The books were removed out of an effort to comply with Florida’s HB 1069, censorship legislation that extends school board oversight on classroom and school libraries

Banned: Along Came a Spider by James Patterson (), the first in the Alex Cross detective series, named one of PBS's "100 Great American Reads.” The book is recommended for ages 13+ or grades 9-12

Banned: The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo (), recommended for ages 13+, a novel-in-verse and Winner of the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature

Other works banned: blockbuster hits like A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin and Dune by Frank Herbert and Forrest Gump, the 1986 novel by Winston Groom

Even Atlas Shrugged, which paints a picture of a dystopian United States and is frequently considered the culmination of Ayn Rand’s career as a novelist, is banned.

What do all these works have in common? Aside from being banned, it’s unclear. Per our program director, freedom to read: “Once again we see a Florida school district erring on the side of extreme caution due to vague legislation and in turn leaving thousands of students without access to hundreds of books.”

Congratulations to Third Man Books poet Sampson Starkweather whose poem ‘What if We Call This Tenderness’ was published by The New York Times today! We’re very proud of his book PAIN: The Board Game. Find it at thirdmanbooks.com, Third Man storefronts, or a bookstore near you. Also, is that really Sam’s number? Give it a try and find out!

Repost from - feels wild and wide open and a little like electricity is running through my veins to have a poem in the New York Times today, especially one that has my phone number in it (which was part a call for love & tenderness & openness, and part a test to see if anyone actually reads poetry), and one selected by one of my heroes and favorite poets, writers, thinkers and people Anne Boyer (a beautiful heart-soul-mind) who is a gift to the world.

"Sampson Starkweather’s 'What if We Call This Tenderness' is a poem that overlays love onto a previously loveless surface of the world. The ardent and persistent calls of a collection agency are notoriously unlikely to be resolved by poetry, but through this poem’s comparisons, their meaning is transformed. The poem becomes a charmed terrain where the “tender” that is money bows to a greater concept, tenderness." -- Selected by Anne Boyer

What if We Call This Tenderness

some corporation or collection agency
calls me 3 or 4 times a day
maybe they are kind
of another mother
or ex-lover
genderless & savagely patient
either way they are after me
I’m convinced they want my poetry
I take it wizard-level
at dodging incoming calls
go invisible at the grocery store
pretend to live
in a world without money
my answering machine
is me crying
(in French, oui)
call me
914-573-9721
please leave me
something tender

Congratulations to Richard J. Parfitt on the book launch for his debut novel Stray Dogs and all the well deserved press:

“Raw, powerful, and the most apt book title ever….Fasten your seat belt, Richard John Parfitt has a journey for you—Wow!” —Murder in Common

“Summer can be an ideal time to read a coming-of-age story and a tense crime drama; in Stray Dogs, you get a novel that brings together the best elements of both.” —Vol. 1 Brooklyn

“A tough growing-up novel, tautly written and full of reflective energy.” —The Critic

“A melodramatic plot, which may on any other kind of paper seem quite difficult to believe, is expertly tempered by something very real; Parfitt’s sublime gift for nailing the romantic yet unruly teenage voice” —Rachel Tresize, Nation.Cymru (UK)

“Richard John Parfitt has been writing taut, tense, economical rock songs since he lived in the same block of flats as my grandmother in Croesyceiliog South Wales. His band the 60ft Dolls ruled the roost in my hometown back then. Now he writes taut, tense, economical, prose and this novel is as fierce, catchy and full of hooks as any of his brilliant songs.” — Jon Langford, The Mekons
