Third Man Books is humbled and excited to bring you a book about one of the greatest artists of modern times, Marvin Gaye, and one of the greatest albums of all time, Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On,’ released by one of the most important record labels in pop history, Motown, written by one of our most beloved and missed music journalists, Ben Edmonds.

The book is available via link in bio, TMR USA store fronts, and bookstores everywhere!

“College campuses were in uproar, young men were being sent to Vietnam, race riots were erupting in inner cities, and Marvin Gaye brought out a song that reflected it all – ‘What’s Going On.’ Ben Edmonds describes the making of a record in defiance of all the odds.” — The Guardian

Arguably the greatest soul album ever made, ‘What’s Going On’ established Motown star Marvin Gaye as a unique and maverick musical talent. His determination and vision resulted in inspirational and pioneering works that, in the era of Vietnam and the civil rights protests, asked America to take a long hard look at itself. Ben Edmonds examines in detail the making of this legendary work — initially rejected by Motown’s quality-control department — interviewing many of the artists and record company employees closest to the singer, to arrive at a deeper understanding of what the album means. It is, without question, one of the greatest stories ever told.

Ben Edmonds, as an editor at ‘Creem’ magazine (1971-1975), played a pivotal role in shaping the narrative of music culture. His insightful articles also graced the pages of ‘Rolling Stone,’ and he served as a US correspondent for MOJO magazine. Tragically, pancreatic cancer claimed Edmonds’s life in 2016. ‘MC5: An Oral Biography of Rock’s Most Revolutionary Band’ with co-authors Brad Tolinski and Jaan Uhelszki was published posthumously in 2024 by Hatchette Books. Edmonds achievements also include two ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor writing awards and two Grammy nominations.

Did you know we have downloadable versions for under $5 available of these sold out chapbooks . . . VANTABLACK by Ciona Rouse, THE TERRAFORMERS by Dan Hoy, and THE PLURAL ATMOSPHERE by Stewart Lupton. Only two days left for our sale! See all our specially priced poetry via link in bio!

Ciona Rouse is a staple in Nashville’s literary scene (you may remember her from our joint event at OZ Arts for International Women’s Day) and we could not be more proud to have her as our pioneer chapbook author. Rouse’s debut poetry collection features 17 poems that are thought-provoking: shaking and waking readers, unafraid to dive into the deep and dark encompassed by the word “Vantablack.” These limited edition (only 350 made) chapbooks include a special audio flexi-disc postcard of Rouse reading her powerful poem, “On the Sidewalk of Troy, TN, 1904.

DAN HOY is the author of The Deathbed Editions (Octopus Books, 2016) and several poetry chapbooks, including The Terraformers, (Third Man Books, 2017) The Tree (Solar Luxuriance, 2016), Omegachurch (Solar Luxuriance, 2010) and Glory Hole (Mal-O-Mar Editions, 2009). His work has appeared in The Best American Nonrequired Reading, Triple Canopy, Novembre, Elderly and other magazines and anthologies. He was a contributor to the collective blog Montevidayo (2010-2015), and was co-founder of the literary arts journal Soft Targets (2006-2007). He lives in Nashville.

Born in 1975, Stewart Lupton was the lead singer in Jonathan Fire*Eater, The Child Ballads, and The Beatings, traveling and performing around the world from 1994-2009. Lupton began writing poetry and song lyrics in 1992, and was awarded the Lannan Fellowship for Poetry in 2008. Lupton died in 2018. The Plural Atmosphere (Third Man Books, 2019) is the first time his poetry has been collected.

Poet Adrian Matejka’s excellent, Funkadelic inspired collection of poems ‘Standing on the Verge & Maggot Brain’ is on sale to celebrate ! Browse all our poetry priced to spread the word(s) via link in bio!

“Adrian Matejka was one of the first poets I read, one of the first poets I loved to read. For all of the reasons that are on display here: an ability to honor the stillness of a moment — to zoom in and pick apart all of its movements.” — Hanif Abdurraqib

A collaboration of visual art and poetry inspired by Funkadelic’s classic albums Standing on the Verge of Getting It On and Maggot Brain, Adrian Matejka’s (Pulitzer Prize finalist in poetry for The Big Smoke) new double-chapbook Standing On the Verge & Maggot Brain is a chorus of poems and visual art that is psychedelic and bright, full of quarter notes disguised as words. The poems bend like a solo bends the big ideas of Funkadelic’s glitter and unrepentant funk. Visually, in the Standing On the Verge section, sculptor and artist Kevin Neireiter translates music into stained glass graffiti in honor of the landmark record. For Maggot Brain, Nicholas Galanin’s (also front man of the Sub Pop band Ya Tseen) art creates musical compositions from monochromatics in response to the quintessential album.

Adrian Matejka is the author of The Devil’s Garden (Alice James Books, 2003) which won the New York / New England Award and Mixology (Penguin, 2009), a winner of the 2008 National Poetry Series. His third collection, The Big Smoke (Penguin, 2013), was awarded the 2014 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. The Big Smoke was also a finalist for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, the National Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize in poetry. His next collection, Map to the Stars, was published by Penguin in 2017.

Join us this Thursday for Banned Books Happy Hour on The Blue Room patio. We have plenty to talk about! Including co-curators Ciona Rouse and Aria Cavaliere’s afternoon with Rep Justin Jones and more!

RECAP: Representative Justin Jones’ Literary Day on the Hill recently packed the Old Supreme Court room of the State Capitol with eager and worried book lovers. Pictured is poet (who is co curator with Aria Cavaliere of Third Man’s Banned Books Happy Hour) , Rep Jones, and poet Caroline Randall Williams (who also read at the event). Very happy that Third Man Books was invited to participate. Very sad that we had no good answer to a young person’s question “Why do they want to ban these books?” He was referring to Harry Potter and Where the Wild Things Are. Both had come up in discussion. In fact, actor David Arquette read from Where the Wild Things Are. Author Ann Patchett read from Brown Girl Dreaming, which has also been widely challenged and banned. Keep an eye out on the progress of Rep Jones Freedom to Read Act (HB 0714).

A few more facts:
Classic titles like “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker, “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card, “Slaughterhouse Five” by Kurt Vonnegut and other titles joined the growing list of books banned in schools across the state. Nearly 1,400 books, consisting of 1,155 unique titles, were either fully removed from school libraries or heavily age-restricted between December 2023 and January 2025, according to a Tennessean analysis.

Between 2021 and July 2023, only about 300 books faced similar challenges across the state. Now, in less than half that time, at least 1,389 books were removed or heavily age-restricted statewide over the past year.

Please join Third Man Books and Third Man Records in support of Tennesee Representative Justin Jones Freedom to Read Act (HB0715). TMB will be participating in Literary Day on the Hill, March 4, to raise awareness regarding the Freedom to Read Act.

From Third Man Books own activism within the banned book space, we’ve experienced that many consider the definition of banned books to mean that access to the book is limited nationwide. That is not true. A banned book is any book that is restricted anywhere- state, local, school, branch library etc. Any community is adversely affected when a book is banned anywhere on the basis of ideology, message, or opinion.

Unfortunately, our banned books event tonight needs to be rescheduled due to weather. Please join us March 20 on the new date.

Meanwhile, here’s an update from regarding more titles under scrutiny.

Repost• : The Trump administration called book bans a hoax — but now the call is coming from inside the house. Vice President JD Vance’s “Hillbilly Elegy” joins the list of books removed from Department of Defense schools pending “compliance review.”

The list of books removed includes ’s “Freckleface Strawberry,” as we previously reported, along with “Well-Read Black Girl” by , “An Indigenous People’s History of the United States” and “Brave New World.”
