Working from anywhere as a remote worker means working from 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒘𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆, not just beautiful destinations across the globe.

From coworking spaces and safety to affordability and great connectivity infrastructure, there are some amazing and beautiful places (some you would never think of) right here in the U.S. that are great for remote workers and digital nomads!

Here are 5 of them in no particular order:

• Idaho? Yes! Boise has so much to offer – safety, both city and outdoorsy options, and cost of living.

• Tennessee – Chattanooga (how fun to say!) is a great option for super-fast internet (fiber), a friendly feel, and a large opportunity for startups and tech companies.

• South Carolina – A safe and peaceful spot, Greenville is affordable, cowork spaces are becoming more and more available, and it’s a great hub for businesses.

• Oregon – Eugene has a strong push toward sustainability, gorgeous nature surroundings, and innovative technology emerging making it the perfect place for remote workers.

• New Mexico – With one of the highest percentages of self-employed workers, Santa Fe is growing as one of the top entrepreneurial cities with a beautiful desert, rich culture, and affordable living.

And there are many more on the list. Seemingly, no matter what scenery or lifestyle you’re looking for as a digital nomad or remote worker, there’s a place for you!

We’re talking the international kind of digital nomad/remote worker today.

Yes, there are an insane amount of destination choices to work from, that’s true. However – with work visa restrictions, taxes, and plenty of other reasons – there are specific places that are more travel-and-work friendly than others.

Some experienced digital nomads have compiled lists and here are the top choices:

Thailand – Easy on the wallet, warm weather, and the bonus of beautiful beaches.

Japan – On the rise as a go-to destination, this is a safe destination for digital nomads, has cutting-edge tech and internet, and a 6-month visa.

Spain – Madrid has remote work incentives, great internet, and affordable cost of living.

Estonia – Not a place you’d think of, but there’s a strong expat community, future-focused infrastructure, and even coworking spaces.

Indonesia – Bali has amazing visa opportunities and is absolutely beautiful.

Mexico – While it may not be as safe as the other destinations outside of expat communities, there are great work/visa opportunities, good cost of living, and great food and beaches.

Portugal – Another great destination with coworking spaces and a great visa for remote workers.

What’s the criteria for working as a digital nomad?

You may be surprised to learn that it’s not just a computer and an internet connection, there’s a bit more to it!

The digital nomad isn’t just the work from home or work at the hotel pool while in a beautiful vacation destination type of remote worker. Digital nomads are out experiencing the world and happen to be working while doing it, thus, there’s more to take into account when away from home for long periods of time.

📶 Internet is definitely at the top of the list – you'll need an easy to access, reliable internet connection to keep your employers or clients happy.

🆘 Another one for the top of the list is safety – have you researched the place you’ve chosen, and do you feel safe enough to work and relax?

🌞 Climate is another big one – does your preferred locale have the season(s) that work for you or will getting around in inclement weather be hard?

💵 Affordability is important, too – are you bringing in enough dough to sustain your adventuring, nomadic lifestyle in the place you choose?

⌚Is there a time difference between where you are and where you’re expected to be online? Is that difference manageable?

Of course, there are so many other criteria you could use like the type of people, things to do, transportation, and more. But we’d say these top the list.

Go through the list for yourself and see if you’re ready for a digital nomad lifestyle. Let us know in the comments – adventure awaits!
