Overcoming Vision Restraints Imposed by Others

As leaders, how often do we face attempts from others to limit our vision? Today, while reading my devotional on John 11:38-44—the well-known story of Lazarus being raised from the dead—I was particularly struck by the final line: “Loose him, and let him go” (John 11:44, KJV). These words resonate deeply with me because they serve as a call to release the potential of our vision from the constraints imposed by others.

We recognize that if we remain bound to other people’s words, thoughts, or disbeliefs, our vision cannot come to full fruition. The only things that are bound and laid to rest are those destined for the grave. Therefore, if you do not want your vision to be marked for death, you must resist the forces that seek to keep you bound and buried....

Get Heard Academy provides the necessary tools, guidance, and preparation for individuals to walk confidently in their purpose. Everyone has something valuable to offer the world and holds solutions that others seek. However, many people struggle to find the right platforms to learn and express their talents and ideas. Everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their dreams of helping others, and barriers such as lack of knowledge, affordability, and timing should not hinder this pursuit. When individuals are unable to use their gifts, talents, and abilities to assist others, it prevents them from fulfilling their purpose. We currently provide coaching for individuals interested in writing books, public speaking, creating courses, or starting and scaling a business through our Get Heard Coaching program. There may come a day when a young man like John will read this book, and commit to staying alive because of John’s words. That’s because John’s heart-wrenching story has the power to change lives; his keen sense of social justice shines through every word. John’s story is uplifting and inspirational in its depth and honesty, and he shows all of us why we should never give up, no matter how impossible or bleak our situation.

His compelling story of self, struggle, family, and race highlights his struggles with addiction, as well as the discrimination those of us with white skin seldom noticed in our younger years. I grew up close to where John did, nearby in a prosperous white neighborhood. It is an understatement to say I was clueless to discrimination and the cycles of poverty, addiction, and life trauma that John, his family, and others endured. John’s narrative, and his authentic voice, moved me deeply for many reasons, one of which was that it helped me understand my own role in the disenfranchisement of John’s family and others in similar situations.

He is being recognized for his extraordinary contributions to youth and community advocacy within the Renton community. This event marks a significant return to the school where he excelled as an athlete and where his life’s journey began, ultimately shaping his desire to help others.

In his inspiring book, *Return to the Sunlight*, Houston details the highs and lows of his high school days, which led him on a path to seek redemption later in life. STANDING FOR OTHERS - On September 10, 2025, Author John Wayne Houston passionately spoke on behalf of others who are now experiencing the same type of trauma he experienced as a child. He vividly remembers watching the school district bulldoze his family's home and the scars that their actions left.

Wednesday night, he stood up for those who are having those same experiences today. He asked the school board members to consider what these families would have to endured as they (the school board members) laid safely in their homes. These issue of eminent domain and power have created murky waters. He reminded them that he wrote about his experience in his book Return to the Sunlight and challenged them to read to gain perspective of what these families are experiencing.
