Got the Gretsch square badge out today for a new session. Everytime I set this kit up I’m blown away by the sound and wonder why I put it back on the shelves.
Also, I’m loving the matched pair of on the overheads. Very natural sounding.

My dads drums. Went to play outdoors yesterday and forgot his drum throne. So I ended up sitting on a wood stump. Was rushed to get some daylight so didn’t have time to tune em up but they sound just right to me. 👌 ☀️

This thanksgiving I’ve felt thankful to have my dads drums.
This isn’t just any old kit.
These drums are a part of me and tell a life long story.
I played my first beat on these drums in my dads lap before I was a year old while my dad guided my hands, played my first performance in 1995 at my 5th grade talent show to a Tom Petty song called “higher place” and to the side of me was my dad running a PA system cheering me on.
These drums tell a story before me though, these have been on a lot of records in the Oklahoma music scene in the 1970s and 80s at my dads studio that included a lot of the early red dirt music records. For years Garth brooks cut all of his first demos at my dads studio and these drums were there and most likely used. They’ve been in so many clubs in Oklahoma and they have the scars and battle wounds to prove it.
When my dad passed I was able to get these drums back but they were in pretty rough shape so I did the best that I could to restore them by stripping all the hardware, sanding them down, staining and sealing them.
I’m so thankful to have these, they really are a part of our story. In this next week I’ll be posting interesting videos on of me playing these drums in different places.

It’s been one year since you’ve been gone. I feel your spirit with me and your energy lives in me. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about you.
Miss you everyday, dad. I miss your smile, laugh and all your talents. You always treated everyone with respect and tried to see the best in everyone. See you again someday. Rest In Peace.
