For years, Turkana has been unfairly painted in a negative light, often described only in terms of poverty, drought, and hardship. Yet the truth is far richer, more hopeful, and far more inspiring. Turkana is not a place of despair—it is a land of opportunity, resilience, and immense contribution to Kenya’s economy and regional stability.
Turkana plays a critical role as one of Kenya’s main sources of fish, exporting to different parts of the country and beyond. This vibrant fishing industry sustains thousands of livelihoods and strengthens food security. Beyond its waters, Turkana is home to oil deposits that represent a major resource for Kenya’s economic future.
But Turkana’s value is not only in its resources—it is also in its beauty. The region boasts stunning beaches along Lake Turkana, often referred to as the “Jade Sea.” These landscapes are breathtaking and hold great potential for tourism and adventure, yet they remain underexplored and undercelebrated.
Equally important, the Turkana have opened their arms to people beyond Kenya. It is home to the Kakuma Refugee Camp, one of the largest in the world, which hosts refugees from across Africa. This generosity has made Turkana not only a symbol of survival but also of humanity, compassion, and shared strength.
The narrative about Turkana must change. It is time to see it not as a place of lack, but as a region of abundance—abundance of resources, culture, and heart. Turkana is not Kenya’s forgotten land; it is one of its most vital and promising frontiers.
