Ham Radio Bench

Ham Radio Bench A page for ham radio operators who want to spend less time reading forum threads and more time on the air.

The single best thing a new operator can do is listen before transmitting. Park on your local repeater for a few days and just listen.

You'll learn the regulars, the rhythm of how people check in, and what the net control operator expects, long before you ever key up.

Nobody learns the etiquette from a book. You learn it by hearing it ๐Ÿ‘

Ham radio information falls into two piles.

The study guides for the license tests, which stop the moment you pass. And the deep technical material written by operators who've been licensed for thirty years and forget what it was like not to know what CTCSS meant.

The first year after you pass is the gap. That's what we write for. Everything we publish assumes you have a license, a handheld or a mobile, and somewhere between zero and twenty contacts logged ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

This is the geography that decides whether your handheld is useful or a paperweight.

A 5-watt HT in the valley reaches almost nothing. The same radio with line-of-sight to a ridge like this one reaches most of the county. Half of learning ham radio is understanding that the radio isn't the variable โ€” the terrain between you and the next antenna is. Worth driving up to one of these at least once, just to see what your repeater is actually looking at.

HamRadioBench makes reference cards, programming guides, and printable resources for hams who have passed the test and want to get on the air.

The page exists because too many new operators pass the Technician exam, buy a handheld, and then leave it in the box for six months because nobody told them what to do next ๐Ÿ”ฅ
