She’s not perfect, but she’s trying. She’s made her mistakes, but she’s learned something from each of them, and bettered herself in the process. She’s the first one to get the call when problems arise, because everyone knows she’ll be the first to arrive with whatever help is needed. It doesn’t matter if they need food, medicine, money, or somebody to stand up to a bully.

She has tried so hard for so long to give her children a happy and safe life, but it’s not easy. Children don’t always act the way you want them to. They break her heart from time to time. She loves them anyway. Her children sometimes refuse to see the depth of the blessings in their lives because they focus only on a few blessings that never fully developed, fell short, or just took too long. This too, breaks her heart. She loves them anyway.

Her children wake up daily tucked comfortably beneath a blanket of freedom she painstakingly crafted from a pattern passed down for generations, its stitches soaked in the blood of their siblings, who gave that blood freely because they knew that a price must be paid for such unfettered freedom and no price was too high, even if the price was their very lives.
Those children make her proud beyond compare. And while she loves them all, these….these are her pride and joy.
She thinks of them with tear-filled eyes as others have taken to shaming her at every turn, calling her evil and wrong. Refusing to recognize her massive progress. She doesn’t understand why they can’t see that even the most oppressed among them are still better off than they would be anywhere else simply because they are HER children, and as such are blessed beyond question. That doesn’t mean that they should never see those blessings fulfilled, only that the work isn’t done just yet.

Maybe this is the year that all her children put their differences aside even if it’s just for a day, and give her the credit and recognition she so richly deserves.

She’s not perfect, but she’s trying.

She is America. This weekend is her birthday. Let’s celebrate the freedom she offers as well as the progress that has been made on the long road to a more perfect Union.
