Dan Einstein was a sharp industry mind and the third pillar in the founding of Oh Boy Records. Alongside John Prine and Al Bunetta, Dan helped turn a bold, independent dream into a reality, serving as the label’s first general manager and a guiding light during its formative years.

Originally from California, Dan’s appreciation for authentic songwriting made him the perfect partner for John and Al. He didn’t just manage the business, he helped bring to life albums like The Missing Years and always operated with the ”fans-first” mentality that defines the Oh Boy Records spirit.

Dan’s contribution to the independent music landscape was monumental. His legacy is etched into every record we’ve released and every milestone we celebrate.

“Songwriting is really an act of listening and getting out of the way of the story,” Robinson says. “Rather than imposing my own creative force or will on something, I think part of me was just born with this gift of paying attention and having that honed antenna. You have to be curious to find the stories.”

Al Bunetta was a renowned music manager, producer, and co-founder of Oh Boy Records. Having managed John Prine for over 40 years, he was truly family, and his essence remains at the heart of the label today.

Born in Garfield, New Jersey, Al got his start in the music industry as a road manager for The Young Rascals in the late 1960s. He later joined CMA (now ICM), where he represented Steve Goodman; it was there that he was assigned as John’s agent, and a legendary partnership began. Frustrated by the constraints of major labels, the pair decided to chart their own course, launching Oh Boy Records in 1984.
Al was a visionary who guided John’s career with deep care and integrity, always prioritizing the right markets and venues. As he famously said, “You can’t just do things for monetary gain. We won’t.”

Happy Todd Snider Day! As declared by Nashville’s Mayor, today we celebrate Todd’s artistic voice and his role shaping the community of creatives in East Nashville. 7 years ago John jumped on stage at The Ryman Auditorium for a spontaneous duet of Illegal Smile, immortalized on video as a legendary performance.

Todd was signed to Oh Boy Records in 2000 after being discovered by Keith Skyes who helped him start opening shows for John. Following the signing he released five albums: Happy to be Here (2000), New Connection (2002), Near Truths and Hotel Rooms (2003), East Nashville Skyline (2004), and Peace Love and Anarchy (2007).

For the 4th edition of Oh Boy 45 Mondays we want to highlight: “My Black Country: The Songs of Alice Randall” as it approaches it’s two-year anniversary. This project was the first non-John Prine album released by Oh Boy Records that recieved a Grammy nomination for Rhiannon Giddens’ version of “The Ballad of Sally Anne” for the 2025 Best American Roots Performance Grammy award.

“I had songs recorded in the 80s, in the 90s, in the 2000s, and 2010s, but I never once had the joy of hearing one of the songs that I wrote from the perspective of a Black woman recorded by a Black woman. With this project...I hope to change that.” - Alice Randall
