B.J. Thomas was an American singer whose warm, soulful voice made him one of the most versatile and enduring performers in pop and country music. Born in Hugo, Oklahoma, in 1942 and raised in Texas, Thomas first found success in the mid-1960s with his cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” He rose to international fame in 1969 with “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” the Academy Award–winning song from the film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Known for blending pop, country, and soft rock, he scored a long string of hits through the 1970s and 1980s, including “Hooked on a Feeling,” “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,” and “Don’t Worry Baby.” In addition to his pop success, Thomas also had a strong presence on the country charts and later became a respected gospel artist, earning multiple Grammy Awards for his inspirational recordings. His clear, emotional vocals and crossover appeal made him a beloved figure across genres. B.J. Thomas continued performing until shortly before his passing in 2021, leaving behind a legacy of timeless songs that bridged country, pop, and gospel music.
