"Soldier's Joy" is one of the oldest and most widely played traditional fiddle tunes in American and Scottish folk music. Dating back to at least the 18th century, the tune has roots in Scottish reels and became a favorite among American soldiers during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Despite its upbeat and lively melody, the title is believed to reference the bittersweet comforts soldiers relied on—such as whiskey, morphine, or camaraderie—to cope with the hardships of war. "Soldier's Joy" remains a staple in old-time, bluegrass, and Celtic fiddle repertoires, celebrated for its driving rhythm and danceable energy.
